I hope not too many of you have come across this one before.

In 1882 William Hill & Son built a 4-manual organ for the Roman Catholic priory of Our Lady, Help of Christians and St Denis, Torquay, Devon. It had the following curious stop list:

(William Hill & Son, 1882)
GREAT ORGAN
Tibia Pileata Gravis	16
Regula Primaria	8
Tibia Fistulata	8
Octava 4

PEDAL ORGAN
Tibia Aperta Magna	16

Fidis Magna	8

COUPLERS

Man. III ad Man. II
Man. I ad Ped.
Man II ad Ped.
Man. III ad Ped.

ACCESSORIES
3 composition pedals to Great
2 composition pedals to Swell
Balanced expression pedal for Swell

In 1984 the organ was rebuilt and enlarged slightly and the stop names changed to English. Anyone care to guess what the original specification would have been in English? Quite a few are pretty obvious, I think. The answer is on the web, but I'll trust you not to peek!

Does anyone know of any other English organs with Latin stop names?

I believe that this organ must have had Rockstro connections.

What fun! I think there were a number of these, all down to the same designer following the same notable whim. We must also delight in a sensible tonal scheme - his eccentricities did not result in him imposing an unsatisfactory selection of stops on succeeding generations. Wouldn't it be good if silly designers were just happy fooling about with the stop names!

Pity it had to be 'brought into line'. Some pompous* 'expert' purged it, did he/she? (*Fruit of unmarried parents, without question).

I was translating a specification from French to English and 'Bourdon' came out as 'Bumblebee' which was rather cute. :D

I once played a Hill with a "blind man" console - the stops were drawn by pushing a button beneath them and then returned by pushing the stop knob in a small way.

It had just had a disastrous electrification, but it did have a very nice "Open Diapason (Wood)" which was a really, really lovely Clarabella. I wonder if anyone else used this terminology?
