In 1882 William Hill & Son built a 4-manual organ for the Roman Catholic priory of Our Lady, Help of Christians and St Denis, Torquay, Devon. Anyone care to guess what the original specification would have been in English? Quite a few are pretty obvious, I think. The answer is on the web, but I'll trust you not to peek! I think there were a number of these, all down to the same designer following the same notable whim. We must also delight in a sensible tonal scheme - his eccentricities did not result in him imposing an unsatisfactory selection of stops on succeeding generations. Wouldn't it be good if silly designers were just happy fooling about with the stop names! Pity it had to be 'brought into line'. Some pompous* 'expert' purged it, did he/she? David Coram Posted January 20, 2006 Share Posted January 20, 2006 I once played a Hill with a "blind man" console - the stops were drawn by pushing a button beneath them and then returned by pushing the stop knob in a small way. It had just had a disastrous electrification, but it did have a very nice "Open Diapason (Wood)" which was a really, really lovely Clarabella. I wonder if anyone else used this terminology?
