  1. Anne Page is to give a recital to mark the rededication, following restoration by Richard Bower, of the GM Holdich organ at St. margaret's Church, Upton (nr. Acle), Norfolk. The oncert, according to the link below, is to be on Saturday 30th September starting at 7:30pm. http://www.greatyarmouthmercury.co.uk/news/joy-as-150-year-old-holdich-organ-is-returned-to-norfolk-church-following-82-000-restoration-project-1-5203269 http://uptonholdichorgan.org.uk/ Dave
  2. This instrument is actually 3 organs (main organ and two choir organs) all playable from two consoles. The case on the gallery dates from the late 1730s and an organ by Johann Brandenstein (according to Wikipedia although the link in this text dates the case to 1765). A bit more information can be found at https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=de&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.die-orgelseite.de%2Fdisp%2FD_Waldsassen_Stiftsbasilika.htm translated into English to an extent. 3. Yes he would be a good bet: I heard his recital at Worcester Cathedral a couple of years back, the first time I had ever heard him play live, and it was absolutely fabulous. Richard Lea and Carol Williams I have never heard live although I have heard CW on YouTube and think she plays very well. Dave
  4. Hi all, Just been nosing around the website of Durham Cathedral and came across this sermon, preached on his final Sunday as DoM, by Canon James Lancelot. Thought I would share it here. https://www.durhamcathedral.co.uk/worshipandmusic/sermon-archive/visions-and-dreams Although I had thought he was not a full canon of the Cathedral a search of the sermon archives does also bring up two other sermons from James. HTIOI, Dave
  5. Evening all, I am wondering if any of our Facebook-using members may be able to help with this one. Our members from Germany may already be aware that the death was announced this morning of Cardinal Joachim Meisner (1933-2017, Archbishop of Cologne 1989-2014). I have just come across this clip on Facebook..... https://www.facebook.com/domradio.de/videos/10155392236108311/ ..... featuring extracts from his sermons. It also shows the choir of Cologne Cathedral singing for His Eminence on the occasion of his 83rd Birthday and that starts 37 seconds in to the clip. Does anyone recognise the music please? I wouldn't mind trying to hear the whole piece. In case the video link doesn't work, the page from which it is taken can be found at https://www.facebook.com/domradio.de/ Cheers, Dave
  6. Morning all, For anyone not already aware BBC Radio 3's broadcast of Choral Evensong on Wednesday coming (5th July) will be live from Durham Cathedral. It will, of course, also be James Lancelot's last CE broadcast from Durham Cathedral before he retires after 32 years on 16th July. I did express hope, on the "Appointments" thread, that Canon Lancelot might be made Organist Emeritus for his long service to the cathedral and I still hope that this will be the case. Dave
  7. No idea but anymore jokes like that will make us all go batty...... Dave
  8. Specifications for both instruments can be found at : https://www.buckfast.org.uk/ruffattiorgan I will be interested to see who does the opening concert: quite a trip from Bristol but I may attend. Dave
  9. Appointment of Mr. Cole confirmed on Wells' website. http://www.wellscathedral.org.uk/new-assistant-organist-announced/ Dave
  10. Just found this clip featuring the late and great John Scott at Merton College, Oxford. Dave
  11. I did but, if it is, I wonder what piece / hymn tune the improvisation is of. Really nice job. Dave
  12. Hi. Wondering if anyone can identify the piece of music which is played for the opening 2 minutes of this clip? Nice use of the cimbelstern bells (although the organ case, AFAIK, has no rotating start on it). Cheers, Dave
  13. Interesting. If you look at the music list for HM Chapel Royal, St. James' Palace it gives Carl Jackson as Director of Music without making it clear if he is merely *Acting* DoM. http://www.chapelroyal.org/docs/CR%20Music%20List%20May%202017.pdf Dave
  14. If ti is Paul then I don't think I recognise it. Dave
  15. Golly. That is a most interesting way to do stop management! Meanwhile here is the kind of hymn that you might not normally expect to hear in a cathedral. It is the anthem of 1. FC Köln. The occasion was prior to a home football game: the German information about the video also says this: "Before the first home match of the 1. FC Cologne more than a thousand fans of the 1. FC Köln celebrated an ecumenical service. Pray for respect and joy in the game. Club President Werner Spinner was enthusiastic: "It was an incredible moment when the FC anthem played on the organ in the cathedral." After the noon prayer on Saturday, he said that in the coming year this institution would already be a "Cologne tradition". At one point you can see a couple of nuns in the congregation: I wonder what they thought?! Dave
  16. Good appointment: best of luck to Mr. Cook. I wonder if Canon James will end up as emeritus in recognition of his long service. Dave
  17. A great shame. If nobody buys out the remains of the firm (if there are any) then I hope the staff affected by this find jobs with similar firms, or in other trades, ASAP. It is indeed the end of an era. I remember seeing the organ in the Dame Monica Wills Memorial Chapel soon after it was installed (2007/8, Peter Collins - NPOR E01290): his firm had originally built it back in 1983 for the now closed First Church of Christ Scientist, Clifton, Bristol (NPOR N09076). A nice instrument too. Dave
  18. Durham Cathedral's website now carries an advertisement for the Master of Choristers & Organist job. No doubt the field of candidates will be quite a strong one. https://www.durhamcathedral.co.uk/news/organist-job Dave
  19. One from the Mormon Tabernacle, Salt Lake City (USA): an arragement, with vocals (!!), of the Toccata from CM Widor's 5th Symphony involving the choir of the Mormon Tabernacle. Dave
  20. More here: https://www.durhamcathedral.co.uk/news/james-lancelot-retirement I didn't realise that he had been there more than 30 years. Sounds like a well-earned retirement to me. If I was a betting man (which I am not) then I would lay a fiver on him becoming organist emeritus in recognition of his long service at Durham. Dave
  21. Afternoon all, Currently have BBC Radio 3's annual feast of music that they broadcast in partnership with other national broadcasters who are members of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union). The first two hours are / were: 1300: Christmas Around Europe (Part 1) 1300-1400: Kallio Church, Helsinki (Finland) 1400-1500: Freiburg Cathedral (Germany) (organ solo concert: on air as I write this) There is then a break for Choral Evensong. In terms of venues the rest of the CAE schedule for today is: 1600: Christmas Around Europe (Part 2) 1600-1700: United Methodist Church, Tallinn (Estonia) 1700-1800: Tivoli Vredenburg, Utrecht (Holland) 1800-1900: Knights' Hall, Pardubice Castle (Czech Republic) There is then a second interlude until later in the evening. Then: 2230: Christmas Around Europe (Part 3) 2230-2330: Auditori, Gerona (Italy) 2330-0030: Vigado Concert Hall, Budapest (Hungary) The first hour of part 1, which featured the YLE (Radio Finland) youth choir of the year, was extremely good. As I write this the second hour is on of part 1 and is a solo organ recital by Freiburg Cathedral's Organist and Kantor Albert Koch on the 1714 Silbermann organ. If you aren't listening to this then why not??! The Christmas Around Europe broadcast is the one day of the year when BBC Radio 3 dominates my day's radio listening without fail. Dave
  22. Yes. I think that was Roger Sayer. It was mentioned in an interview that Choir & Organ magazine did with him some years back. Dave
  23. On that Grenzing link I would love to know what a "110" is. Dave
