  1. I love Spotify. Having just started subscribing I am delighted with being able to cache hundreds of albums on my new Android phone with 32Gb of storage. If only some of the major classical labels (Chandos, Hyperion) were on there, it would be perfect!

  2. I have to play a corporate gig in a couple of weeks - because of the venue, they wanted a mixture of Christmas and 'Mediaeval' music.

I guess I know what they mean - they want Hollywood-style Mediaeval music, but thinking about it some more, I would be keen to give them some of the real thing.

    Any recommendations?

  3. I fear the answer is far too technical to answer here, but in essence what you need to do is loop back the audio card by reconfiguring it within Windows 7. Anything played back on the machine can then be captured by Audacity.

Not all cards/drivers support this configuration however, so you may be unlucky in your quest.

  4. Christ Church, St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex

Saturday 30th October at 7.30 pm

Prof. Ian Tracey (Liverpool Cathedral) plays the 150th Anniversary Organ Recital

Walter (known as Harry) Goss-Custard (1871-1964), the first Organist of Liverpool Cathedral from 1917 until 1955, was born in St Leonards and was the son of Walter Goss-Custard, Organist at Christ Church from 1864 (when the Old Christ Church was only just in use) until his death in 1907.

Tickets £10 (to include a glass of wine)

  5. When I did A-L Music in the mid-1960s, a pre-condition of entry was a Grade 6 practical, for which the pre-entry condition was Grade 5 Theory. I rest my case.

This was still the case in the mid-1980s when I did A Level Music...

  6. I would suggest that like MA and BA, or MSc and BSc, the lesser qualification is dropped in favour of the greater qualification.

I disagree, especially in the case that the Masters degree is in a completely different subject to the Bachelors. If you have it, flaunt it!

  7. On the anthem front, T. Tertius Noble's "Come, O Creator Spirit" is a good sing. It doesn't seem to be that well known. Banks publish it, I think...

  8. ... , I can remember being bombarded with material about an 'electronic' music stand device, that meant no paper. I haven't bought one, but the marketing has gone very quiet. Does anyone know if its still going?

I went to an orchestral gig about 3 years back, and they were all using similar devices. A quick touch on the screen seemed to turn the page.

  9. I love this carol, but one verse always vexes me:

    The shepherds at those tidings

    Rejoicèd much in mind,

    And left their flocks a-feeding,

    In tempest, storm and wind,

    And went to Bethlehem straightway

    This blessèd babe to find:

O tidings of comfort and joy.

Having heard a Willcocks recording of this from yonks ago, he has the choir rhyme wind with mind which makes sense when one considers all the other verses rhyme so why should this one be any different. I have tried to encourage my own choir to adopt this approach but get good-natured ribbing over my intentions. Do any erstwhile contributors hereon take a similar approach to this verse?

  10. Interesting that the case work doesn't match the rest of the gallery etc. Is there a reason for this?

Looks good though - I look forward to retiring to Lyme Regis in about 20 years and becoming organist.

  11. Just noticed this from the BBC Web site today, regarding the Last Night:

    Attenborough and Goldie play Prom

Not for the purists, maybe, but sounds fun!!

    Tony

As many may recall, at the orignal performance it was Dennis Brain (the great horn player) who took the organ part. It was a shame they didn't try the same conceit last night and have a familiar face taking the organ part. Jo Brand perhaps?

  12. The instrument, like its owner, is rather eccentric. Nice chap though and very accommodating to those who want to come and play the beast which originally came from an Irish Cathedral and has been expanded, including the "128 foot" stop. I had a bash on it last autumn and was made very welcome by the host.

  13. I'm not sure if this topic has already been discussed on this forum, so apologies if I am duplicating anything.

I was approached by the churchwardens at my regular gig this morning, enquiring if I knew about the VAT position on payments for organ tuning and repairs.

I had a faint recollection that the VAT rules for certain works within churches had been changed in The Budget a year or two back, but I don't know how these changes applied to the regular payments for organ tuning and for other anciliary repairs which have been incurred since.

Clearly in these credit-crunched times it would be advantageous to be able to claim back any VAT which is owing to the parish.

Therefore, is anyone able to offer advice on this? I tried to search the HMRC website for information but I couldn't spot anything definitive.

    Thanks for your help!
