Yes, it is rather splendid.
I did read somewhere that some nefarious souls have found a way to capture the streams and make MP3s. I couldn't possibly condone such behaviour!

This doesn't work for me. Are you sure you are not viewing a cached version, Paul?

There is one other that I am familiar with; for the closing 30-odd bars of the Andantino in G minor, Franck indicates Voix Céleste et le tremblant.

The Choral nr. 2 in B minor makes mention of the Celeste I think (my score isn't here so I can't say for definite...)

A couple of times recently I have played instruments which are suffering from warping/lifting/cracking soundboards. I don't think it is my playing!
Wood is such a 'dynamic' material. Are there any examples which spring to mind of instruments with soundboards constructed from a more 'inert' material? What are the benefits of sticking with wood, if you are constructing a new instrument?
Sorry if this is a dumb question...

I had cause to play a 1930s Morgan & Smith recently which had a "synthetic solo" division. These were imitative stops, played on the lowest manual, made up - it seems - of combinations of stops on the choir division.
Is this a typical feature of instruments of the time? I haven't come across it anywhere else so was curious...

In this part of the world there are few, if any, church musicians who do not still miss Charles for his wit, personality, eccentricity, humililty, understanding and acceptance of his own human failings and those of others. We also miss him for his wide musical knowledge and his superb practical musicianship. How many other church organists would have got a congregation of several hundred at their funeral in Brighton on an ordinary weekday afternoon including well-known organists from as far afield as Bath and York.
Hear, hear. I miss his shop as well. It was a delight to drop down on a Saturday morning for an hour or two of browsing, gossip and strong coffee !!

Allan Wicks premiered "O maximum hysterium". He told me that he practised it for a year and was certain that he could play all of the very complex rhythms correctly. He then played it for "Max", who said, "Oh very good! But you must play it much more freely!"
Cheers

I was reminded of this tale whilst reading the recent biography of Malcolm Williamson. MW wrote a large-scaled Organ Sonata for Allan Wicks and pretty much said the same thing after AW had practised it for ages and then performed it with the composer present. The actual quote was along the lines of ".. play it more freely, like Brahms!"
Could this have really happened twice to poor Allan or have you mixed up your Masters of the Queens Musick, Barry?..

Ordered!
UK readers may like to purchase this in EUR, saving about three quid on the quoted GBP price, at current exchange rates...

Thomas Trotter's arrangement is quite tricky, but worthwhile.
Yes, it is a scream!

Hey, Rudolph is lots of fun - is there a score I can purchase online somewhere?...

I note that it is not mandatory for the organist to be a Christian, only desirable - another sign of the times?
I suspect anti-discrimination legislation is behind such a wording...
25K for a full time, very skilled job, is rubbish really isn't it? When you can get much more than that for pushing a lever on an underground train to go faster or slower it puts it all into perspective. Of course one industry is highly unionised whilst the other is not. Perhaps we need a more militant outlook for the organist fraternity. Forward, brothers !!!

I see the DoM job at St Martin in the Fields is being advertised this week. They are in fact advertising for two vacancies currently:
http://www2.stmartin-in-the-fields.org/pag.../vacancies.html
A finance officer is required, as well as a DoM.
Guess which one pays more?.. Sad, but a sign of the times I fear...

A few years ago, I had a working relationship with a Yank called Randy Bender. It just goes to show that even the most amusing of names can be owned by real, sincere people...

In Lindfield, Sussex, the former "Tiger" pub at the end of the churchyard is now Church House. Spirit(ual) guidance of a different kind I guess... Shame they put in a toaster a few years back, the organist could surely do with a few stiff drinks after Mass...

Although not identified in the YouTube clips, I believe that this is Karen Christianson.
Definitely someone to watch out for.
Absolutely. Imagine how long her 'CV' will be when she gets into her teenage years and beyond!!

OK - I'm trying that!
Looks cool.

OK, so here's the first piece of interesting news. Is there a way of creating a speadsheet of some sort on this site where we could start a list from, say 1-100 with Llandaff now at no1 with space for web addresses next to it?
1 Llandaff Cathedral (Nicholson) Wales in London news item
Why don't you just edit your first post to reflect any stuff people post in this thread? We therefore would know where to go to see the canonical list and we can browse the rest of the thread to see the way that list came about.

Are they not all online via the JSTOR archive?

I've always played in socks - 30 years man and boy - to the point where even the lighest shoes feel too cumbersome.. Of course the downside is the loss of a built-up heel making some pedallings rather difficult (e.g. bridging thirds etc.)

From the last page:
Full organ without major reeds (ffff)
I must try that on my brother's windy 2M Lewis...

Any church that uses one of these (or, indeed, the CDs) doesn't deserve an organist in the first place!!

Noy too off-topic I hope, but does anyone know where I might get a copy of the piano solo arrangement (NB not the song version) of this which I need to transcribe, hastily, for organ. I remember learning the piano version as a child and it is full of schmaltzy harmonies which would seem to demand plenty of celestes and salicionels on the organ! Thanks in advance.
Peter

During my undergrad days we used to venture from Southampton out to the Milburys at Beauworth (a few miles east of Winchester just off the A272).. good pub, good beer, good food AND a very deep well with a big waterwheel in the middle of the bar!

Aw gee guys I thought you might find it a hoot!
P
Well, I for one enjoyed it very much. Thank you Peter!
