  1. Those interested in Carlo's memorial service but who were unable to attend last Friday might be interested in purchasing a CD of the event which I recorded. Inevitably it has had to be slightly abridged as the service lasted just over 2 hours, but the feeling of the event will be carefully retained. CDs cost £15 each plus P&P of £2 regardless of quantity to UK addresses - quotations will be given for overseas postage. Please email me directly for information via adrian@acclaimproductions.co.uk for payment information and ordering instructions.

  3. I have since learned after posting the above that electronically simulated sounds are now attached to the Tickell console and are in use.

I am desperately sorry that I might have alarmed readers to a fact that is now so obviously true.

Not quite as it may seem. We have long been able to connect Quire and Nave organs via MIDI and we are simply able to draw these stops from the Nave organ (having set it up ahead of times) by pulling out MIDI to PEDAL. This is nothing like installing electronic stops within the Tickell instrument.

I hope that may clarify the position and dampen such rumours!

This topic has proved interesting in more ways than just the organ project. This link opens up the soi-disant historic services. In fact, the most recent historic service was last Sunday (the 5th, with the excellent choir of our own Royal Holloway College); the archive goes back over two years. They seem to be almost exclusively Eucharistic services and the choir is almost invariably girls and men. For the boys, try December 25th, 2006 with an alert performance of the Willcocks “Dancing Day” arrangement, or the Funeral service for President Ford (January 2007). Further perusal of the whole website will, also, introduce the word “docent” to those of you who, such as I, have not hitherto encountered it.

If there are any Choral Evensongs, I haven’t found them, but by way of compensation, there are some excellent shots of the organ console during recent Eucharists, which is, I suppose, where we came in.

  5. Firstly, I'd like to congratulate Adrian Lucas and his team on the superb new Quire Organ at Worcester. It was a truly brave decision to remove the oddity that was the previous instrument and it has paid dividends. Listening to the new CD back to back with the last recording of the old organ really shows the difference.

This has had me wondering if there has been any progress on the Transept Organ phase of the project?

    Good morning, John,

We've just broken up for the Summer so I'm just enjoying my first Sunday off for ages! Glad you enjoy the sound of the new organ - we are enjoying the instrument enormously in all sorts of repertoire as well as for accompanying.

After so many years of major fundraising for the Quire organ, the Cathedral has taken the wise decision to give everyone a chance to take a few deep breaths, allowing other departments within the cathedral to make progress with their own projects. We are still keeping our eyes open in the chance that we might yet stumble across a single donor with the cash needed to continue to part 2 - around another £750k including a vast amount of major logistical moving! If you know of anyone, do let me know!

As you might well imagine in the present financial climate, funds are not in great supply for anyone and, with the Olympics already leeching support for the arts, things don't look particularly bright for the next few years. Thank goodness we got the Tickell in when we did.

Keep supporting our recital series. George Castle (Sub Assistant here) plays next on August 1st followed by Barry Jordan (Magdeburg and Mander Board member) is here for the first Saturday in September. The year's season closes with David Briggs on Saturday 3rd October. Enjoy!

    With best wishes,

    Adrian

  9. Is the day on 31st January definately going ahead? Will need to know ASAP as I will have to book a hire car for the trip up to Worcester so please advise.

    Dave

Yes indeed - I make it we may have around 25 juding by the expressions of interest so far. Sadly, we may not be able to do the tour up inside the instrument as the Cathedral has just invested in a whole new scheme of harnesses for work up aloft and noone is allowed up there without the full day's training. However, there will be plenty to see (and hear!) nonetheless.

  10. Good morning all!

I'm just picking up on the suggestion that we plan a Board day-out here at Worcester sometime after Christmas. Looking in the Cathedral Diary, I am going to suggest Saturday 31st January 2009, though if this date causes problems, we may be able to look again.

My initial plan would be as follows:

    10.30 am - Coffee

11.00 am - Introduction and Demonstration

12.15 pm - Tours inside the cases

    1.15 pm - Lunch break

2.15 pm - Opportunities to play the organ and visit organ/music artefacts in the Cathedral Library

4.30 pm - Possible open choir rehearsal and tea

    5.30 pm - Choral Evensong

To facilitate all this, we would charge a nominal fee of £10 which would include coffee and tea (but not lunch) which would be put towards the Music Appeal.

I you are interested, please let me know by replying to this message and we can then see whether the day is a viable proposition.

    Many thanks,

    Adrian

  11. Good programme! Is this a properly pressed CD or is it a CDR as so often seems to be the case these days with Organ and Choral recordings. My player is untra sensitive and generally will not read CDRs from at least one company, not to mention the limited lifespan they have. A friend has the same problem.

It is properly pressed!.....meanwhile, you could buy a new CD player...!

  12. Just a reminder that the Dedication Weekend for the new Worcester Cathedral organ takes place next weekend - October 4th and 5th.

Saturday's Choral Evensong at 5.30 includes all sorts of demonstration of the organ in all its variety and the 8pm recital by Thomas Trotter should be an absolute wow! Tickets for the recital can be ordered from the Worcester Live Box Office on 01905 611427 and cost £15.

On the Sunday, the Sung Eucharist at 10.30 features a new double organ mass by Adrian Lucas and the 4pm Evensong will include the installation of the new Archdeacon of Worcester.

    Come and join us.

Incidentally, the first CD of the organ will be available at the recital. I've recorded the Reubke Sonata and the whole of Vierne I to show off all the colours of the instrument. Availability through Worcester Cathedral Shop only, though I may make some available through e-bay if you're interested.

    With best wishes,

  14. I was in Worcester over the weekend and decided to call in and my friend Keith hearnshaw was playing the Rodgers Organ for evensong. Have to say the Rodgers certainly packs some punch and filled the Nave with sound very well. Now to the new Kenneth Tickell Organs. Can't really comment yet as I haven't heard the instrument but the cases look magnificent and almost reminds me of another Westminster Abbey although the design is not quite the same. As I under stand the 32's are not available until the building of the Transpet Organ. Nobody has explain why this case is being sited on the other side of the nave. other than there are some beautiful carvings behind the Transpet Case and the Dean & Chapter want to exposed them again. This seems rather silly to me. I don't really see how this is logical. In addtion to this, removing this case is a large undertaking how on earth do they intend to remove some of Hope Jones old diaphones buried in the case and thus silent for many years ? And I gather there is talk of another Organ at the West End to be built at some stage. Or is this suppose to be a Nave division similar to what Canterbury installed some years ago ?

    Dear Ronald,

When Hill built the organ in the Transept in 1874, we believe that the case was much deeper and came further forward in the transept. The case was reduced in size when Hope-Jones turned this four-manual into a mere division of Solo and Pedal in the 1890s. This whole instrument was originally designed to go in the North Transept where it would have a more stable temperature and would be illuminated from the front by natural light coming through the windows on the South side. The funds were donated by the then Earl of Dudley who had had some sort of disagreement with the donor of the Window in the South Transept. In true charitable fashion, the new case was enlarged vertically such that it would obscure a good portion of the aforementioned window, though at the same stroke it would look less good as it would always be illuminated from behind.

In the present larger scheme of works, building an organ towards the West end of the Nave as well as the current instrument in the Quire would solve the problems of two major uses but would not adequately cover work with the choir in the tower area and Eastern Nave positions. In order to use the Transept case (which needed to be preserved anyway) as part of the solution, it would need to be moved forward in any case. The combination of this and the audibility situation from the new Quire console suggested that, when restored, it should return to the position in which Hill originally intended to build it. In any case, the structure within this case would have to be altered radically for the new division, so a new frame would be part of this scheme. All these factors point conclusively towards the North Transept as the correct location. There it will stand with space behind it from which to see the memorials and the North Transept window. As a bonus, more light will be able to come into our dark building through the uncluttered South Transept Window.

All we need now are the funds.....donations gratefully received!

    Hope that's useful.

  15. Just a quick question: I noticed from the shots of Vox Humana the swell mixture is not in place. Where is it?

It's gone on its Summer holiday...!!! No, seriously, it has gone back to Northampton to be opened up a little more to match in better with the swell chorus and, in particular, the reeds. While most of the voicing has been done on site, with a stop like this, it is much easier to do it on the voicing machine in the works. It is due to return, duly tanned, on Tuesday or shortly afterwards.

  16. Good afternoon, gentlemen!

    (Apologies to any ladies present!)

I've just posted my final set of photos (at least for the time being) which I hope you will enjoy. Inevitably there are a few small issues which we are still sorting out at the moment, but the sound of the instrument is truly wonderful and she is very comfortable to play, I think.

We've had quite a few visitors now to see and hear the organ and look forward to your support over the coming months as the instrument beds in to her ongoing work of playing the daily office. You already know about the initial recitals on August 8th (Gillian Weir) and October 4th (Thomas Trotter) and I hope you will be able to come along to one or both of those.

We will also be recording BBC choral evensong which is to be broadcast on Sunday 10th August and I am sure there will be a lot of interest in that.

I will be recording a CD in September which will be available at the October launch weekend.

Meanwhile, may I thank you for your interest and hope to see you in Worcester in the near future.

    Adrian
