  1. Too true. I never know which is worse - playing one verse too many or one too few.

I managed to do both at my Grandmother's funeral. I played the last verse on the page as if it was the last but then became aware that the congregation hadn't sat down. I turned the page, realised my error and set off on the last verse just as the congregation had decided that I'd forgotten and sat down. I was mortified and hoped the ground would open up. Luckily several members of the family reassured me that my gran went to meet her maker with a smile on her face.

  2. I have the Editio Musica Budapest edition and a question. At bar 188 (plus upbeat) there is a marking for the LH part to move to manual 1 (RH still on II). There are no more manual changes marked until bar 200 (both hands on III). If that is correct, should they not swap at 190 and again at 194 and, if so, what happens after that? Or is it editorial and a matter of taste?

  3. Peeters chorale preludes before and after Evensong (O filii et filiae and Christ ist Erstanden).

Does anyone play Peeters any more?

Yes they do. My Easter highlight was accompanying (on the joanna) a truly superb tenor singing the first of Vaughn Williams' Easter Mystical Songs.

  4. Dear all,

I am planning on playing Easthope Martin's 'Evensong' soon and thought I'd look up his dates of birth and death. I've tried a number of websites and they seem to disagree on DOB. Is it 1875, 1880 or 1882, please?

  5. Reading the sad tale of a fire damaged Organ reminds me that on Wurlitzer theatre Organs the Swell boxes always close when the instrument is off because of fire regulations. I wonder if the reported behaviour of the Compton is based on the same idea; they built quit e few theatre and cinema Organs in the early days.

    Regards to all

    John

Although presumably that's to prevent a fire that may start in the organ from spreading out to the theatre. It may have happened once. Old fire regs are usually a (knee-jerk) reaction to a previous fire.

  6. We dutifully followed the episcopcal edict to have bread only and then all went into the hall and shared a communal spoon to stir our coffees. I couldn't help thinking that something hadn't been thought through.

  7. Thank you for your help and suggestions Vox and tiratutti. Will investigate these but any more ideas are welcome!

    All the best,

    Charles

If there are any more suggestion, I would be very grateful as it is my church's centenary this year (the organ's centenary is 2011).

    Thanks

  8. Oops! Thank you Ian; I thought it looked familiar but blamed it upon the early hour... I suppose the numbers 2,0,0, & 8 in the heading were the clue

    My coat is waiting

Oh no, have I missed Stockhausen day?

  9. I have always understood that Libra is basically the boys' choir of St Philip's Norbury where Bob Prizeman has been D-of-M for many years.

    Malcolm

You are quite correct. There is no difference in the line-up. They also manage to sing a (very fine) full choral evensong every Sunday evening using a wide repertoire. The congregation is usually meagre so there's plenty of room if any of you are in the area.

    BTW The name is Libera.

  10. In Playing them in & playing them out ("a huge new collection of processionals and recessionals") there is a toccata-type thing called Fêtes by Stanley Vann which is rather good and always goes down well. (I'm promoting it as he dedicated it to me!)

I tried it out this morning and, yes, it went down well. I've had the book for some time but had not managed to get that far.
