I couldn't find my copy of 'Crown Imperial' so my congregation were treated to 'Fanfare for the Lord Mayor of London' and 'March (Things to Come) by Sir Arthur Bliss (arr Gower).

1Too true. I never know which is worse - playing one verse too many or one too few.
JS
I managed to do both at my Grandmother's funeral. I played the last verse on the page as if it was the last but then became aware that the congregation hadn't sat down. I turned the page, realised my error and set off on the last verse just as the congregation had decided that I'd forgotten and sat down. I was mortified and hoped the ground would open up. Luckily several members of the family reassured me that my gran went to meet her maker with a smile on her face.

I have the Editio Musica Budapest edition and a question. At bar 188 (plus upbeat) there is a marking for the LH part to move to manual 1 (RH still on II). There are no more manual changes marked until bar 200 (both hands on III). If that is correct, should they not swap at 190 and again at 194 and, if so, what happens after that? Or is it editorial and a matter of taste?

Also the concluding voluntary, played by David Briggs, on PRCD 5022 'Choral Evensong from Hereford Cathedral'. Only £4.99 direct from Priory.
Thanks. Sounds like a sound investment.

It's not for the faint-hearted, and one or two systems will require patient practice...
Thanks. I've just got it and had a first bash through and a little practice before and after services this morning. I think it's 'do-able'. It's a good piece though, well worth persevering with.

I have been asked to play the Carillon. How hard is it? I don't want to commit to playing something that is beyond me. It might be rather embarassing.

Peeters chorale preludes before and after Evensong (O filii et filiae and Christ ist Erstanden).
Does anyone play Peeters any more?
Yes they do. My Easter highlight was accompanying (on the joanna) a truly superb tenor singing the first of Vaughn Williams' Easter Mystical Songs.

Richard Pilliner played it at Southwark Cathedral this month.

Next Sunday's (24th) edition of The Choir features Sir David Willcocks

I played the Hallelujah Chorus after midnight mass last night and quite a lot of the congregation sang along! It was like a Christmas karaoke.
Happy Christmas and New Year.

Thankyou to you both. Information on Martin seems to be fairly limited.

Dear all,
I am planning on playing Easthope Martin's 'Evensong' soon and thought I'd look up his dates of birth and death. I've tried a number of websites and they seem to disagree on DOB. Is it 1875, 1880 or 1882, please?

I did a wedding a couple of weeks ago where the Bridal march (sic) was called BRIDLE march!
Unbelievable!
Isn't spellcheck a wonderful thing?

Reading the sad tale of a fire damaged Organ reminds me that on Wurlitzer theatre Organs the Swell boxes always close when the instrument is off because of fire regulations. I wonder if the reported behaviour of the Compton is based on the same idea; they built quit e few theatre and cinema Organs in the early days.
Regards to all
John
Although presumably that's to prevent a fire that may start in the organ from spreading out to the theatre. It may have happened once. Old fire regs are usually a (knee-jerk) reaction to a previous fire.

We dutifully followed the episcopcal edict to have bread only and then all went into the hall and shared a communal spoon to stir our coffees. I couldn't help thinking that something hadn't been thought through.

Hello,
what's about Healey Willan's Epilogue in d Minor? It is from 1908.
Cheers
tiratutti
Hi,
Is that the one on 'St Theophilus'?
-
Thank you for your help and suggestions Vox and tiratutti. Will investigate these but any more ideas are welcome!
All the best,
Charles
If there are any more suggestion, I would be very grateful as it is my church's centenary this year (the organ's centenary is 2011).
Thanks

Oops! Thank you Ian; I thought it looked familiar but blamed it upon the early hour... I suppose the numbers 2,0,0, & 8 in the heading were the clue
My coat is waiting
Oh no, have I missed Stockhausen day?

Has John Scott taken the St Paul's Psalter to New York?

Cynic,
Thankyou for your post. It as a considerable help to those of us a little further down the food chain.

I have always understood that Libra is basically the boys' choir of St Philip's Norbury where Bob Prizeman has been D-of-M for many years.
Malcolm
You are quite correct. There is no difference in the line-up. They also manage to sing a (very fine) full choral evensong every Sunday evening using a wide repertoire. The congregation is usually meagre so there's plenty of room if any of you are in the area.
Andrew Chadney
BTW The name is Libera.

In Playing them in & playing them out ("a huge new collection of processionals and recessionals") there is a toccata-type thing called Fêtes by Stanley Vann which is rather good and always goes down well. (I'm promoting it as he dedicated it to me!)
I tried it out this morning and, yes, it went down well. I've had the book for some time but had not managed to get that far.

Fair, I think... i like "camp vulgarity" while acknowledging his outrageous virtuosity and admirable chutzpah... 3* is hedging bets...
For reasons unknown he decided not to perform this at RAH, he played a transcription of Shostakovich's Festival Overture followed by 'Nun komm der heiden Heiland' (BWV 659).

One word of warning - they do leak quite a bit of sound.
I hope you didn't find that out during a sermon.
Happy Easter
