  1. Oh, that was just a quick-and-dirty MIDI rendition on my PC with some organ samples - at this time of the year I didn't have the time to drag the recording equipment to church... Cheers,
  2. To all on this board, a Merry Christmas! I don't post very often, but I enjoy reading the posts and have had nice private conversations with several of you! Please accept this little recording as a token of my appreciation for the knowledge and friendship you have shared with me: http://evensongmusic.net/audio/Fuga_a_la_Noel.mp3 Most of you are probably either attending services or on the bench right now - hope everything went well, and that you have a nice time with family and friends on the Holiday Best regards, Jonathan

    Reveyron

Just a follow-up on this... The CD turned up out-of-print, but a kind person who reads these lists offered me some help, and I finally have it A nice disc, pity it is out of issue! Jonathan

    Organ Symphonie

Just as a solo form... Thanks for asking! -Jonathan
  5. Dear Friends, As I have mentioned in previous messages, I am writing a book on the Organ Symphonie. The book will be published on the internet and made freely available for anyone to access and use for research purposes. A physical copy will also be sold, and used to fund further research. You are invited to see the first 3 complete pages: The Introduction: http://www.blackiris.com/orwig/symphonie/intro.pdf A list of known Symphonies and the scores/recordings I have of them: http://www.blackiris.com/orwig/symphonie/o...phonielists.pdf The first entry - Germaine Labole: http://www.blackiris.com/orwig/symphonie/Labole.pdf I am starting to work regularly on this project again, and so will be trying to add to the book more regularly in the next weeks. The list of Symphonies needs to be updated, as I have been sent 30 or 40 more composers (thanks to Dr. John Henderson), but it is still a good start, and will give you an idea of the sheer number of Organ Symphonies out there. I will post links to new entries as they are written. Any help, corrections or further information on the entries is gratefully accepted, as well as news about symphonies I've not heard about yet. Best regards, -- Jonathan Orwig
  6. ....and mvt 4, the Final... http://evensongmusic.net/audio/MaquaireSym1mvt4.mp3 Enjoy, -J
  7. What, are we enjoying this? <grin> Here's mvt 3, the scherzo http://evensongmusic.net/audio/MaquaireSym1mv3.mp3 The Final may take a few more days before I'm ready to post it - Cheers, Jonathan
  8. Now, I give you mvt 2 of this work: Andante http://evensongmusic.net/audio/MaquaireSym1mvt2.mp3 Enjoy! Jonathan
  9. Thought I would post this here - I'm proud to offer a recording of my Toccata and Fugue in Gm http://evensongmusic.net/audio/OrwigToccata+FugueGm.mp3 Enjoy.... Jonathan
  10. Thanks, Pierre... I may join if you think the list can endure google-translated postings (yuck!) At any rate, glad you like the music, and be assured I love de Maleingreau - I have 11 piano sonatas and the 3 organ Symphonies, all of which I adore regards, Jonathan
  11. And, it seems that on that French forum (if I read correctly) I was misquoted to say that Maquaire was an assistant of a student of a student of Widor (I _think_ that's how it comes over to English - my French is a bit rusty) Pierre, if you have posting privileges over there, could you correct them for me? I don't trust my French enough to subscribe and enter into the discussion... I'd likely either offend or at least cause much laughter :-) Maquaire was a student of Widor Maquaire was _also_ one of Widor's assistants at St-Sulpice. On the score I note that it is designated op. 20... I wonder about the other 19 works - apparently none of those were for organ ******** Also, do note that there are MANY "unknown" composers in their own countries... just read through one of the composer dictionaries and see how many you recognize. I've often felt it a shame that the amazing corpus of work by the Belgian composers has been largely neglected... I asked a Belgian friend why no one seems to play de Maleingreau, for example - His response? "He wasn't French" Regards, Jonathan
  12. As part of the research for my book on the organ symphonie, I am coming across all sorts of neglected works for organ... I've also been studying scores, recordings and making a few recordings to boot, and I think I will share my findings with you all here when I have the time. I've now started study of Maquaire's lone Symphonie for organ, and find it to be a tuneful, engaging piece. He was a pupil of and assistant to Widor, so that influence is evident in his writing. For your enjoyment, here is the first mvt (Allegro) http://evensongmusic.net/audio/MaquaireSym1mvt1.mp3 Since the piece was published in 1905, and Maquaire left this vale of tears in 1906, the music is firmly in the public domain... so no worries on the legality of posting an audio file. Do enjoy... -Jonathan

    Reveyron

Thanks, Alastair... I'll follow up on that lead. -J ****** Thanks for your help - I was directed from his website to fnac.com in France, where I was able to order the CD (although it is more than DOUBLE the price to get it to me here in the USA... a 11 Euro CD will cost me 27 E, about $30US) No matter... I've been trying to get the CD for 2 years now, and no one seems to import it across the pond(!) Thanks again,
  14. Now, before I dive into this, let me state a few caveats for those of you out there with a critical spirit: 1. I have received permission from the composer to post these files for download, so no mechanical or copyright violations are taking place 2. I'm not making any money nor gaining from this monetarily.. I merely want to expose this music to a wider audience. Last time I tried to share some knowledge about the availablilty of some music, I received a number of nasty private notes about it (granted, it was my own music, and some saw that as self-serving... one does what one must in the name of promotion) Having lurked for awhile after that experience, I now feel like trying again, but am taking pains to make sure people do not get the wrong idea nor jump to conclusions! Dan Gawthrop wrote this Symphony "O Jerusalem" as a comission for Graceland University in Iowa and was premiered there in September - I believe it was a celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the installation of their Casavant organ Mvt 1 - Allegro http://evensongmusic.net/audio/G1-1r2.mp3 Mvt 2 - Largo http://evensongmusic.net/audio/G1-2r1.mp3 Mvt 3 - Giocoso http://evensongmusic.net/audio/G1-3r1.mp3 Mvt 4 - Finale http://evensongmusic.net/audio/G1-4r1.mp3 This is quite a tuneful and romantic-sounding work - no squeaks, honks or blatts here. Hope you all enjoy the recording - if you like the music and are interested in it, I can put you in touch with the composer - just email me or PM me, and I'll get you the details Best regards, Jonathan

    Reveyron

Hello folks... A couple of years ago I found reference to a CD of the organ works of Reveyron, IIRC on the REM label (and, I think, a reissue of an LP release). Alas, by the time I ordered it, it was already out of issue! If anyone can help me track down a copy, I'd be most grateful Cheers, Jonathan
  16. I know I'm weighing in late here on this topic (sorry, that's what happens when you're a newbie on a BB!) I had the privilege to be in the audience for the 2004 premiere during the American Guild of Organists convention. I sat WAAAAY in the back up in the nose-bleed section, and even from that vantage, the organ filled the room gloriously - never strident but having a very warm and full voice (and the room was PACKED with people!). On many organ BBS and email lists I have heard indignant comments from organists who hate the looks... I'll only say that it _does_ work (for me) in that building, and if you dislike the looks, you are free to close your eyes - the sound more than makes up for it.... One more comment - the Sowerby Concerto played at that concert deserves a wider hearing - I believe this was the first performance in something like 60 or 70 years (!).... it sounded very much like Gershwin might have written had he lived another 20 years and continued maturing as a composer... Cheers,

Thanks, Alastair.. I know the internet is full of people trying to make a fast buck, moreover email lists and bulliten boards fight a constant war against people spamming them with unrelated solicitations... In deference to the prevailing sentiment on _this_ board (although no official word has come to me publicly or privately from the moderators) I'll choose to continue my above policy: I've already said it once, but I'll say it again somewhat differently: I am here to promote the ORGAN and its music NOT myself or my goods.... I should think anyone who loves the organ and its music would welcome ANY advancement of our art, but it seems the knee-jerk response of many of us is to see the worst in every situation..... I do have a list of folks that I send out email updates to regarding the website - if you want to be part of that, just PM me with your email addy and I'll gladly add you to the list. Finally, I realize every online "community" has its flavor, and I'm doing my best to figure out what that is here and fit in as much as possible... Cheers, -J

Like I said, forget it... I _am_ selling the scores (and BTW Boulnois has been dead since 1918, check your facts) I was unaware of the difference in copyright law in the UK, and hence your concerns. So, I'll not be providing links or referring to my site any further on this forum unless it is a simple link to an audio file of one of my own comps or one of the living composers whose music I carry (or someone who has been LONG dead). In this case, I will provide a tinyurl link so that my site is not being "promoted" I'm not here to drum up business or create problems, I just wanted to share my knowledge. Speaking for just a moment about promoting oneself.... I hear moaning and groaning about the state of the organ and much hand-wringing concerning the future of the instrument and its music.... In my investigaton of many unknown (or lesser-known) composers, I have found often worthy music passed over becasue the composer was loath to promote him or herself. One of my desires is to see the music CONTINUE to be written. performed and discovered.... HOWever.... when I have tried to promote my music and that of others I have been called all manner of names and derided for being self-serving etc, etc. (I'm not necessarily speaking of this instance, mind you - you've been reasonably kind, if a bit sarcastic, which is better than most) Face it folks... an unknown composer HAS to promote themselves if they want to have their music performed... in today's world no one else is going to do it FOR them. Making money is nice, but I'd MUCH rather have my music PERFORMED. I'd GLADLY _give_ my music to anyone who promised to perform it. But what happens? Usually when I try to do this, I'm ignored (or worse) slapped about. I'd a lot rather someone just say "you need to fix thus and such" or "thanks for your generosity, but that's not the style I prefer to perform". I _know_ highly visible performers are probably BOMBARDED with composer wannbe's sending them scores, so I try to avoid that. What I _do_ try is to offer audio files of my music for folks to listen to, then they can CHOOSE whether they want to express interest to me. Now. If _this_ is inappropriate use of this forum, I'll be glad to refrain from that also but do me a favor, and give me some better ideas how one might get their music OUT THERE Cheers, -J

excuse me? I was not aware posting audio files was "advertising" I never asked for anyone to buy the darn things... I merely posted them for your listening pleasure. I also did not read anywhere in the rules when I signed up that it was against the rules to put a link in my sigline to my website. If the forum moderators wish to take exception to this, I'll gladly refrain from such... ALL of these pieces were published BEFORE 1922 which makes them in the public domain in the USA (yes, I've researched this carefully Now, I'll refrain from posting any further on this forum until someone with moderator authority cares to comment Sheesh... what a welcome

Hello, friends {edited by Giwro} After the public whipping below and a couple of nasty private notes, I've removed the contents of this post. I thought I might meet some nice fellow musicians here and share what knowledge I have, but it seems that is not wanted. I bid you adieu, and say "no wonder the organ world is in trouble when we can't even act nicely to each other" Sadly, -J
  21. I'm a few months late on this thread, but I must agree that the corpus of material from Eastern Europe is simply staggering (and of mostly high quality) I tend to look for stuff off the beaten path anyway, and much of this music fills the bill quite nicely. Cheers, -J
