  1. Introit: Locus iste – Bruckner

    Responses: Smith

    Psalm: 45 – Ferguson

    Canticles: Noble in B minor

    Anthem: A Litany – Walton

Voluntary: Placare Christe servulis – Dupre

All subject to change depending on what mood I’m in.

  2. I'm almost sure I recall someone in post on the south coast in the early seventies/late sixties who wore a selection of hoods at the same time. I don't think it's just a dream...

...and at one of the smaller cathedrals too - or so I've been told.

    A

That narrows it down. Any more clues?

  3. I am sure that somewhere there is a condition called 'hood envy' - mostly found amongst the more closeted church choir environs.

It does exist, I'm not sure why, but it does exist.

Let your musical ability do the talking, I say.

  4. Help Please. I’ve recently moved from Scotland to Ashford, Middlesex (Surrey really). I’m looking for a church choir to join (in the area) that sings BCP evensong weekly. There’s one slight problem though. Due to the shift work I do, regular attendance (services and practice) isn’t possible. Any thoughts gratefully received. Thanks.

  5. ........ if you can't hear the organ from that position, they shouldn't have put their mics there. End of argument. :P

I agree. The "Best seat in the house" should be just that, a seat. If a member of the general public can't sit/stand there, then they shouldn't record there.

    All IMHO.

  6. I think every Carol service/Nine Lessons and Carols that I’ve ever done has opened with “Once in Royal”. Most Midnight Mass services I’ve been to start at 23:30, with “O come, all ye Faithful” as soon as possible after midnight, this usually includes the last verse “Yea, Lord we greet thee”.

  7. =====================

I note that I am now second only to 'pcnd' in the volume stakes, but I think you should know that of the 2371 posts, possibly as many as 2,000 are complete rubbish!

In your opinion only. I find 99.9% of all your posts incredibly entertaining.

    :P

  8. I guess it’s a matter of personal preference. I like to see a short history/specification of the organ, a brief description of the pieces (including what, if any, “special” stops were used), a brief biography of the performer, and (space permitting) photos of the organ.

    :)

  9. Another Magi carol, if you want to indulge, is Warlock's Bethlehem Down which I don't think anyone has mentioned.

A wonderful piece, makes you think as well.

OK, thanks, Patrick; I take it back - except the bit about the quality of the piece! B)

    I rather like it.

  10. How about Peter Cornelius' "The Three Kings" arranged by Ivor Atkins?Carols for Choirs1 - an evergreen standby if ever there was one (the Oxford Jacques & Willcocks got me through many an Advent Christmas and Epiphany!)

Also worth considering is the Mendelssohn piece.

    B)

  11. All of these sets are about 15-20 years old now................. Is it perhaps time for someone to revisit the cathedrals and make a new survey of Psalm singing? It would be interesting to see if there are any substantial changes in approach.

I can't remember where I read it, but I'm sure I've read somewhere that Priory are looking into recording a new set of the Psalms.

I've heard the Priory Durham and Rochester disks, both of which are very good.

If I buy the Priory set, I'll have even more money to spend on organ cds.

    :)

  12. It has been announced that Philip Moore, Organist & Master of the Music since 1983 is to retire at the end of summer term 2008 having held the position with distinction for 25 years.

I understand he played a fine recital on Saturday evening concluding the 2007 minster recital series.

No doubt the betting shops will be open in due course with regard to a successor!

    Best Wishes

    Philip

As predicted by Richard, several months ago. I wish Philip a long and happy retirement and thank him for all he has contributed to Cathedral/Church music throughout his illustrious career.
