  1. I may be wrong, but I *think* that (depending possibly on the brand of touchscreen and the driver software) you can "swipe" across a number of stops.
  2. Apologies if my simple question caused any offence.
  3. Any relation to Tony Pinel (ex-St Mary Redcliffe)?
  4. Interesting to see that it is a 2-year fixed-term appointment. Some chat on Facebook this morning among people in the area hinted that an appointment might have already been made, but no names were mentioned and I obviously can't comment further on that.
  5. When was the last time a cathedral organist (or one of similar standing) was knighted? The tradition seems to have died out.
  6. I think one of the many comments on Blogspot implied that they would.
  7. I know very little, other than what one can read on the Blogspot post and the comments on it. Rumour has it (and I can't confirm this) that something like this was mentioned in the Job Spec for the new DoM.
  8. I was totally appalled to see this news from one of my favourite cathedrals today, where our daughter was one of their founding Girl Choristers. http://lackcompassion.blogspot.co.uk/
  9. Follow-up to my post #46: Kris Thomsett is now Acting DoM at Newcastle, following Michael Stoddart's departure to Auckland, New Zealand (Holy Trnity Cathedral).
  10. James Norrey to be the Michael James Assistant Sub-Organist at Rochester from January 2016 in succession to Ben Bloor. Ben, who joined us in September, has been appointed Organist of the London Oratory.
  11. Which means it might not be a "hybrid", but the "Bradford" organ that was located at the west end of the cathedral for many years. Or was that organ installed later?
  12. Kris Thomsett, currently Organ Scholar at Salisbury, to be Assistant DoM at Newcastle Cathedral. Formerly 6th form Organ Scholar at King's, Rochester (and an excellent Alto in the Cathedral Voluntary Choir), then Chelmsford (gap-year) and Norwich (UEA).
  13. Douglas Tang (Kings, Cambridge) to be College Organist at Haileybury (according to Mr Tang's Facebook page today).
  14. At Rochester the choir was mostly unconducted in Robert Ashfield's time, but that changed with Barry Ferguson's arrival in 1977. Allan Wicks was one of the first to start conducting (occasionally) at Canterbury in the early 1960s.
  15. That will teach me to read more frequently the Sumner that I had as a teenager!
  16. I was going to say "What about the 5-manual Conacher at Calne?" - But I see that it was reduced to 4 manuals some years ago.
  17. Quote from the said Mr Noon's Facebook page today: "Very thrilled that from January I will be Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral."
  18. Are you also visiting the former Organist at SW, who lives opposite the church, and has two very interesting organs in his home?
  19. Ben Bloor, currently Organ Scholar at Westminster Cathedral, previously Organ Scholar at St George's Chapel, Windsor and New College, Oxford, to be the Michael James Assistant Sub-Organist at Rochester Cathedral from 1 September 2015. This new position replaces the posts of Cathedral Organist (currently held by Adrian Bawtree) and Organ Scholar (currently Jack Spencer).

    Gabriel's Oboe

    Brilliant! Thank you!

    Gabriel's Oboe

Does anyone know of an organ arrangement of this (the whole piece, not just the accompaniment)? If so, from whom can it be obtained? (Urgently needed for a wedding next month.)
  22. That's interesting, and would explain some of the things that surprised us on our visit last week. We were led to believe it dated from c.1985-86, but maybe it's not as old as we thought.
  23. Correct. That's where I was last week. There is also a large quantity of pipework stored in the triforium, said to be from a Hill organ formerly in the Tower of London (St Peter ad Vincula?) donated to Norwich by HM The Queen c.15-20 years ago, together with a substantial sum of money for its re-erection (which obviously hasn't happened). Can anyone throw any more light on this?
  24. Mainly because discussion of pipeless instruments is discouraged on this board. Anyway, this sounds very much like the one I am just off to visit.....
