  1. The Mulholland Grand Organ in Ulster Hall, Belfast is well known as one of the too few examples of William Hill's work left in the country. An interesting feature of the case are the horizontal trumpets, which were the original W.Hill Solo Tuba. Do the horizontal resonators in the case function at all? - Particularly with refence to the 'Fanfare Trumpet' added by Manders in 1982. Were the Hill resonators utilised? Thankyou James Goldrick
  2. With regard to the order of manuals in Cavaillé-Coll's instruments, does the Positif play from the bottom manual only when there is a seperate Positif de Dos case such as St Ouen, Rouen? The three-manual instrument at St Sernin, Toulouse has the Grand Orgue first and the Positif second. Is the Positif case empty as at St Sulpice or does the P. action cross around or through the G.O. action? Thanks James Goldrick

I heard recently that the reason Isnard built the St Maximin organ with a chamade for the treble of the keyboard was to strengthen the treble of the Grand Jeu during the summer months when the tuning of the Cornet and the reeds were made an unbearable combination. I wonder if this ingenious foresight was applied to many other instruments of the era. Thanks James Goldrick

Two Anneessens specifications I have seen, one being Bridlington Priory, the other from St Patrick's Catholic Church, Sydney, (The last remains of this 3-manual instrument were unfortunately pulled out a couple of years ago.) both contained as their pedal reed, the stop 'Contra Tuba'. The Victorian solo reed instantly springs to mind though I seriously doubt this as the case for Anneessens. Is it essentially a French Bombarde or as was previously mentioned, closer to the German style? Thanks James Goldrick
  5. How prominently do tierce ranks feature in Harrison's and others 'Harmonics' stops? Living in Australia, there isn't much of Harrison's work to be found. Thanks James Goldrick
  6. I've gathered that in most aspects of organ action and pipework, there are almost always several variations to choose from: ie. Backfall or suspended; Free-reed or beating; Compton buttons or Rothwell stopkeys. Have there been any obscure alternatives to the rollerboard as a means of distributing tracker action laterally?   7. I was reading over the Worcester specification on the NPOR, when I noticed the Swell lacks any sort of mixture or mutation. How does this affect the Worcester 'Full Swell' in contrast to the traditional English swell? Thanks James Goldrick
  8. In regards to large mixture compositions; Technically you could regard the La Force on the Pedal organ of Weingarten's 1750 Gabler as a 49 rank mixture... I don't think they get any bigger than that.

A few weeks ago, I was reading through Dr. A.G Hill's Organ Cases and Organs of the Middle Ages and Renaissance and in the two seperate volumes, they both seem to deal with a single organ; the spectacular west-end organ of St Jan's Cathedral, Hertogenbosch. In the second volume it is referred to as Bois-le-duc. The images are both similar, however the latter is in slightly clearer detail and there are some variations in the casework between the two. Can anyone clarify this for me? Thank-you James Goldrick
