  1. The 1886 Abbott & Smith organ of the Church of St. James, Cragg Vale, West Yorkshire has been moved to the Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Marchilac-sur-Célé, Mid Pyrenees, France over the last two years. At 10am today, Sunday 10th April, their will be an inauguration with the Benediction of the organ and a Pontifical Mass, followed by a recital by Giorgio Revelli at 3pm. This link is to this instrument https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2g00u5_promenade-musicale-en-la-tres-fascinante-abbaye-de-marcilhac-sur-cele_creation Last year, le Père Guillaume, Parish Priest of l'Abbaye de Marcilhac-sur-Célé in South Western France, raised nearly 40 k€ through crowd-funding. 2. As wolsey and John Pike Mander pointed out, we have Michael Barone of Pipedreams to thank for this excellent memoriam to John Scott. http://pipedreams.pu...ings/2015/1533/
  3. A moving tribute to John Scott on The Choir (BBC R3). Very disconcerting to hear his voice in the extract from an edition of the programme some years ago which featured his work at St Thomas, Fifth Avenue. For those of you who can get BBC iPlayer, the item is about ten minutes before the end of this episode. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06flbm9 They also mentioned that they are broadcasting two of his Choral Evensong broadcasts: from St Paul's on 28th October and then on 23rd December from St Thomas's Church. John Scott's life and work will be remembered at Evensong in St Paul's Cathedral, London, this Friday, 9 October, at 5 pm. https://www.stpauls.co.uk/…/john-scott-commemoration-arrang…

  7. This William Harris Prelude is also a beautiful piece of music. It was played and extemporised as Princess Diana was taken into Westminster Abbey, before her Funeral. https://youtu.be/F6It-AHK4EI
  8. I would like you to see this comment I made about recent happenings around the 1870 C-C Organ. In 1833, the Cavaille-Coll family moved from Toulouse to Paris to put in a Tender for the Organ of St Denis. More recently, someone else from Toulouse travelled to Warrington last week - this time to hear the 1870 Cavaille-Coll Organ in a Recital in the Parr Hall. He Is Mathieu Delmas. Mathieu has given me a great deal of information about organs in France - but not just those of Cavaille-Coll. Toulouse is home to many fine organs - the first one to come to mind is that of Saint-Sernin. http://www.toulouse-les-orgues.org/les-orgues/un-patrimoine-exceptionnel/toulouse-city-of-the-organ.html?lang=en Not only was Mathieu in Warrington for last weeks Recital, but also for the visit, on Monday, when fifty members of The Organ Club were in the Parr Hall as part of their tour of Organs in the Region. I had tried to message Mathieu about this visit, but it turned out that he hadn't received my message. I was delighted to see him up there at the console, being registrant and page turner for those who were playing the C-C. I later found that he had been invited by a friend who was part of that group - so you can imagine my surprise. To hear Professional Organists playing this instrument here in Warrington that day was almost a surreal experience. It came to me that they were playing the music of those Organist/Composers who had actually played this 1870 C-C Organ when it was either in the avenue du Maine - Paris demonstration hall, or in Bracewell Hall, Nr Skipton. It will be a memorable occasion for a long time to come. End of my comment.
  9. The jewel in the Warrington's crown will shine again in a Recital tomorrow in the Parr Hall, Warrington given by two accomplished Organists. This will be a memorable event, and hopefully this fine instrument will continue to be more than just a memory, that is if Warrington Borough Council doesn't decide to let it go to Sheffield Cathedral. We proved that people were willing to travel from far and wide to hear this fine instrument last March - and there's no reason why we can't do it again !!! This is the link to a recent article about the town's Organ by Cheshire Life reporter, Robert Beale. http://www.cheshirelife.co.uk/out-about/preserving_the_cavaille_coll_organ_at_parr_hall_warrington_1_3782813 This is the link to the Facebook group 'Warrington Cavaille-Coll Organ' https://www.facebook.com/groups/660405240701596/ Show your support, and we will be able to keep it here. 12. The 1870 Cavaille-Coll Organ in the Parr Hall, Warrington, Cheshire, England. The great hall of Aristide Cavaille-Coll at avenue du Maine, Paris lent itself to displaying Cavaille-Coll's biggest instruments, like the one built for Mr John Turner Hopwood of London, a rich music publisher, which was installed at his home Bracewell Hall near Skipton in Yorkshire. It was a three-manual of 41 stops, with two enclosed divisions. Saint-Saens and Widor shared the first two performances on this instrument in March, 1870. A third programme was given soon after by Alexandre Guilmant. Following its installation in England, the organ was inaugurated by William Spark, on November 7th 1870. It was to be in Bracewell Hall for about five years, and in 1875, J T Hopwood had it moved to his newly built home, Ketton Hall, Near Stamford, Rutland. In 1873, Cavaille-Coll completed a large organ for Albert Hall, Sheffield, England. For French people - to see such masterpieces of workmanship installed elsewhere than in a church, it was necessary to travel to England at that time. As a result of Sheffield having a concert organ, there was considerable interest in having one built in France. In 1875, a large Cavaille-Coll organ was purchased for the Amsterdam Palace of Industry. In 1877, a three-manual Cavaille-Coll Organ was installed in Manchester Town Hall. In 1878, a four-manual Cavaille-Coll Organ was installed in the Palais du Trocadero in Paris. Of these these five organs, the 1870 was moved twice, its third home was the Parr Hall in Warrington, England, having been bought by the Warrington Corporation in 1925 and installed the following year. The Sheffield Albert Hall organ was lost in a fire in 1937. The Amsterdam organ was bought by two wealthy art lovers in 1916, and in 1924 it was moved to the Haarlem music hall - the Philharmonie. From 2004 to 2006, Flentrop Orgelbouw restored the instrument to its original state. The Manchester Town Hall Organ has been modernised and enlarged, and in 1970, the original console was replaced. This organ is now said to be unplayable. The Trocadero organ has been moved and rebuilt several times and is now in Auditorium Maurice Ravel, Lyons. Little of Cavaille-Coll remains. In spite of its lack of maintenance and regular tuning, Warrington's Cavaille-Coll Organ is still a remarkable instrument. Unfortunately, and because of financial restraints, Warrington Borough Council has been unable to implement Ian Bell's recommendations in his last report on the condition of the instrument. So the only attention the organ receives, is when it is tuned by David Wells Organ Builder before a concert. This organ is worthy of much more that it is getting at the moment. The last Recital in March was attended by 272 people, and was the largest audience at a recital for many years. The 1870 Cavaille-Coll Organ has been discussed on many forums, and I have taken the opportunity of sharing Archive material with those of you who would like to know more about this fine instrument. This can be seen on the Facebook group 'Warrington Cavaille-Coll Organ'. https://www.facebook.com/groups/660405240701596/
  13. We need to make as many people aware that the Warrington Cavaille-Coll Organ is vitually unaltered - except for the removal of the Barker Lever movement. We are incredibly lucky in so many ways. We have, almost on our doorstep, three significant people - Roger Fisher, Emeritus Organist - Chester Cathedral, Professor Ian Tracey Organist Titulaire - Liverpool Cathedral, and David Wells - Organ Builder. That can only be good !!! Over 40 years ago, Douglas Carrington, a former Editor of 'The Organ', said 'It is maintained by David Wells of Liverpool, whose enthusiasm and skills make the historic musical instrument a joy to hear and to play.' He also said 'The importance to the nation of this organ cannot be overstated.' This is what we MUST convey to others !

  16. Thanks Colin, your reply is appreciated. I have no reservations about anyone knowing who I am. It may be of benefit if anyone wants to contact me directly. I'm not sure how I can go about dropping my pseudonym - it may be possible to just sign my postings off with my proper name ? Incidentally, Ian's Recital had not one, but two City Organists in the hall AND an Emeritus Organist and his wife. It was good to have such support - and not only from those, but from the Parr Hall Management AND not forgetting David Wells' important contribution to the condition of the organ on the night.
  17. I used every means available to me to give much publicity to Ian Tracey's recent Recital in the Parr Hall, after Culture Warrington announced this event. The response, on the night, was tremendous - thereby proving that with plenty of publicity, AND an excellent Recitalist - it is possible to get a decent audience for Recitals in Warrington. There were 272 people present - that was approximately 100 more than at the Cavaille-Coll Bi-Centenary Recital in June, 2011. Many of these people travelled a good distance to be there - and they weren't dissapointed. There appears to be a lack of interest, on this site, for this 1870 instrument, which seems strange to me when so many folk have been so vocal about its future in the past. Never-the-less, I will continue to post information about it on the Mander site in the future. For those who would like to know about Ian's Recital - he played a superb programme extremely well as he roamed around Paris in his mind's eye explaining almost every turn of the road to an enthusiastic audience. It was an excellent programme - the theme being 'The Great Parisian Tradition' He took the opportunity of emphasising what an important instrument we have in Warrington. This was given loud spontaneous applause. I sincerely hope that this is the beginning of another chapter in the life of the Cavaille-Coll Organ in Warrington.

  19. We are looking forward to a long awaited Recital in the Parr Hall, Warrington. I am sure that anyone who can be there will not be disappointed. Almost 14 years have passed since Ian Tracey's last Cavaille-Coll Recital in the Parr Hall. That has been far too long. On that occasion, we were treated to a programme of music in the Great French Tradition. This was a recital exploring the great Parisian Churches and their music. The tour went from Right Bank to Left Bank - with the music of the organist-composers who had held positions at each of these churches, in their turn. From Couperin to Durufle, the journey was unforgettable. This is the link http://bit.ly/1jSDIMu to yet another evening of memorable music.
  20. In the late 1960's the Warrington Corporation were considering accepting £105 scrap value for this 1870 Cavaille-Coll Organ. If this had been allowed to happen - we would all have been the losers. This http://www.warringtonchoir.org.uk/cavaille_c.html gives the history of the organ. For those of you who would like to hear it played, there is a CD recording available from http://rfisher.me/recordings-page/organ/cavaile-coll/
  21. http://www.pyramidparrhall.com/whats-on/event/organ-recital-ian-tracey/ 7 Weeks from today is the day !!! This http://johnsorganworks.co.uk/blog/read_30158/cavaillecoll-200th-birthday-bash.html was the last time this magnificent organ was heard in a Recital. Another Recital is provisionally planned for next October.
  22. I saw this on organrecitals.com Wednesday 12 March 2014 - 7:45 Parr Hall, Warrington admission £5 / concessions £4.50 Ian Tracey (Liverpool Cathedral)
  23. Thank you for the information Martin. The OUP album is good value for money. I will pass this on to the person who wants the music. As a small token of encouragement, I've given him the Jennifer Bate recording - she was good enough to autograph the CD for me the other day. Shame you weren't able to retrieve your music from Salisbury.
  24. Does anyone have a copy of the Whitlock Five Short Pieces they no longer want ? I have seen that they sometimes come up on ebay and Amazon, but there's nothing available at present. There's none on the Used Organ Music site in Liverpool.
