  1. This is a truly wonderful anthem - sung by a great choir !!! http://youtu.be/PSYK5JHgRnA
  2. I am looking for a second-hand copy of Marcel Dupre's Prelude & Fugue in G minor for an Organ Scholar I know. If anyone can help me to source this, I will be very grateful.
  3. The Walford Davies tune brings back my early days as a Chorister.
  4. After almost two years since the Cavaille-Coll Bi-Centenary Recital in the Parr Hall Warrington, we are still awaiting the next recital on this organ. I can assure you, it is NOT for the want of trying !!! I reminded myself of this report of that recital : --- http://johnsorganwor...thday-bash.html I will continue my endeavors to persuade the Warrington Borough Council Executive to give consideration to the appointment of a Borough Organist. As long ago as 1978, after his recital was broadcast on BBC Radio Merseyside, they allowed the offer from a distinguished organist for this position to slip through their fingers when they chose to overlook his letter. SHAME ON THEM !!!
  5. This programme is available on iPlayer until 8.59pm tonight. http://www.bbc.co.uk/i/b01s945t/ 'Sir Colin Davis - With Love - In His Own Words'. It will be of interest to ALL, whether they be players, singers, or listeners. It is an insight into a consummate musician.
  6. Thanks very much 'pcnd5584' - I will see if the DVD is still available. I have a recording of the Flentrop organ in Dunblane Cathedral, Scotland - played by George Wilson. (LBCD22). This wasn't easy to find, but well worth the effort when we did.
  7. This link http://telegraph.co....-and-music.html shows that often changes to the first Hymns Ancient & Modern were opposed, for many reasons. Interestingly, it is said of A&M that 'That was the book that gave Betjeman's poetry the forms it took'.
  8. There is an interesting review of Ancient & Modern Hymns and Songs for Refreshing Worship on the Amazon web site. It is written by Mark Dancer and entitled 'Ten years early'. We still use Ancient & Modern Revised and never like singing from other hymn books with altered words or omitted verses. What is so wrong with 'Earth has many a noble city' that it needs to be altered? Tempo Primo.
  9. I tried your link Philip http://www.newaandm.co.uk/ but when choosing 'hymn books' the web-site doesn't seem to be up and running yet. Not your fault - A & M need to correct it. Tempo Primo.
  10. Bach doesn't come any better than this for me. http://youtu.be/bKj2LRMoSKk
  11. Have just found this note referring to Louis Vierne's organ bench 'There's a choice of organ benches too - if the modern one is deemed too high, guests can opt for Louis Vierne's own bench, parked rather unceremoniously in the corner and stamped with a commemorative brass plaque.' Another has noted that 'To this day, the bench on which he was seated is kept near the entrance to the organ loft nearly 100 feet above the nave. It bears a small plaque with his name. Both bench and plaque can be seen in this link http://www.hectorsfr...com/2006-ND.htm A short link (out of sync) to Louis Vierne sat on this bench This is perhaps the only know film of him performing. What a wonderful man he was !!!
  12. A memorial evensong for Sir Philip Ledger will be sung in King's College Chapel, Cambridge, on 2 March at 5.30 p.m.; and the annual Foundation Concert on 16 March at 5.30 p.m. will be dedicated to his memory. On Friday 22 March, at 7.30 p.m., there will be a special concert in the Glasgow University Memorial Chapel. Tickets are free on the door; or phone 0141 332 5057; or visit www.rcs.ac.uk/boxoffice. (Church Times obituary, 11 January, 2013).
  13. Thanks Douglas. I agree, it was indeed a constructive suggestion. A showing of the film has also been suggested to me recently by two Professional organists who have both been great supporters of the Warrington organ for many years. Perhaps the present custodians of the instrument, as well as the local townsfolk, could be made aware of the importance of this organ by the showing of the C-C film. If we were fortunate enough to appoint a Borough Organist, we would certainly be in a much better position than we are at present regarding promoting the organ to the public. I was recently informed that as far back as 1978, a candidate for this position did indeed offer his services , gratis, to the Warrington Borough Council after his recital on the C-C Organ had been broadcasted by the BBC. This person was then a comparatively young organist who had a lot to offer. He has, since then, become a renowned and well regarded organist. Sadly, for whatever reason, he received NO reply. Had he done so, perhaps things could have been a lot different between then and now. We were indeed the losers on that occasion.
  14. Davidh, I hope you don't mind if I clarify the situation David, my interest in the Fugue State Films Cavaille-Coll project, (which coincided with the Bi-Centenary of the Birth of Aristide Cavaille-Coll) was from the point of view that here in Warrington we have an 1870 C-C Organ which is in need of restoration. Thanks to David Wells and his team, it was in recital condition when we celebrated the Bi-Centenary 17 June, 2011. My reservation about this organ NOT being included in the DVDs was simply that this instrument could have benefited from the International publicity it would have received. Maybe it could have been compared with the St Sulpice organ and been considered for Heritage status. When I contacted Will Fraser of Fugue State Fims, he suggested that perhaps we would like the film to be shown in Warrington. Why do we need to see the film when we have our own C-C Organ !!! The future of this organ has been in the organ discussion arena on several web-sites since February 2006. I was more than disappointed that we weren't even considered for the project, but that's 'water under the bridge now'. Maybe it was deemed to be too much of a 'hot potato'. Never-the-less, while I still have breath, I will try to promote this C-C Organ which is presently in the Parr Hall, and still waiting for its future to be decided. In my opinion, the appointment of a Borough Organist is long overdue. I apologise for being so outspoken, but someone has to say it. Tempo Primo (Mrs) PS. Don't get me wrong, I am full of admiration for the C-C DVD project.
  15. I am lost for words at a time like this. http://news.uk.msn.c...st-after-attack
  16. I think I've got this right, now. Please will someone say whether I have, or not, as the case may be. In previous years, I have watched the BBC2 'Carols fron King's' and always wondered what the final voluntary was. This year, I have realised that what we are shown on Christmas Eve is recorded earlier in December, and the Service is 'Invitation only'. The PDF programme of the 'live' Service ends with the Bach In dulci jubilo, BWV 729. The PDF programme of the 'recorded' Service ends with the Bach Von Himmel hoch, BWV 606. I now know that this is what we always hear at the end , when the credits are shown. I think you will all agree, last night's 'Carols from King's' is always one of the best parts of Christmas.
  17. The comments (when watched on YouTube) following this link of Pierre Cochereau playing the Cavaille-Coll console are very interesting --- in-as-much as the general comment is that the organ no longer sounded like a Cavaille-Coll.
  18. This is the time to remember Louis Vierne playing the Notre Dame organ in 1929 - the first year that sound was recorded electronically. AND
  19. Stephen D Smith's web-site has a few details and a tribute. http://www.organrecitals.com/carlo.php
  20. Whilst listening to the Jennifer Bates Whitlock CD, I have found that there's a lot on the internet about Percy William Whitlock which is of great interest. http://www.musicweb-...l.com/whitlock/ The information about the Plymouth Suite is worth a read. http://whitlockfamil...photos.aspx?p=6 Here, you will find seven photos listed as PH1026 - 1032. A remarkable man !! Remarkable enough for me to contact the Whitlock Family Association to ask them to include Percy Whitlock in their 'Noteable Whitlocks' list.
  21. It is interesting to see that the subject 'Cameron Carpenter' was discussed in the category 'The Organ and its Music' as long ago as 28 July 2008. There were many replies then, and the last posting was 5 May 2010. No doubt he will come up yet again in the future, but there will probably be very little to add to what has already been said. To quote one comment made elsewhere 'CC is like Marmite, you either like it, or hate it!
