  1. I was referring to episode 6, where the Queen has a dream that Tony Blair is crowned king, after which the choir sings D:Ream's Things Can Only Get Better. This was filmed in Winchester Cathedral with the cathedral choir doing the singing (I hope they all received a decent fee). I've now just realised that the rose on the surplices was perhaps the Labour Party emblem, so actually a choice by the film-makers that was appropriate for the fictional context (the Queen's preoccupation with Blair-mania).

  2. On a similar note I'm wondering why the members of Winchester Cathedral choir featured in episode 6 (who were pretending to be Westminster Abbey choir) had red roses embroidered onto their surplices.  Does the cathedral have a stock of such surplices solely on the off-chance they need to sing at an England rugby match? Were they specially made props for this ten seconds of television? The mind boggles...

All that may well be the case but the Bishop himself chose to strike the organ with what most seem to regard as unnecessary force.

Being charitable I would suggest he intended simply to ensure that the knocks were heard clearly by the congregation.

  4. The Bishop has apologised on Twitter:

"A privilege to rededicate the shiny new organ and 'wake it up' with three knocks from my crozier! Apologies for leaving three dents on the side of the organ case - a story to tell in the future about the bishop's over zealous wake up shake"

  5. They will presumably have to make an interim appointment at least until Trinity Term, or more likely until the summer if they don't get the advert out soon (assuming the new appointee will be giving three months notice to their current employer).

  6. I'm looking for recordings of pre-18th century organ music by the likes of Gibbons, Tomkins et al.

I know of only one disc, namely Tudor Organ Music by Carl Smith on Naxos. Such music does sometimes appear on choral recordings to fill in the gaps etc, but I'm looking for dedicated albums. I can't believe there's only one, but perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places. Does anyone have any recommendations?

  7. I'm sure rumours of this have been mentioned on here before but my search for such posts was fruitless.

However in the particulars for Andrew Nethsingha's replacement I found this:

"The College has acquired a redundant Father Willis organ to be refurbished by Harrison & Harrison in Durham. An ad hoc Committee supports the Director of Music and the College’s Head of Capital Projects in planning for the installation of the refurbished instrument, scheduled for 2025. The Director will work closely with the Development Director to complete the fundraising target for donations to underwrite the cost of this project, and with Dr William McVicker, our Organ Advisor, to sell the redundant parts of the existing organ."

Another big Cambridge job available as Richard Pinel moves on from Jesus Cambridge...

I liked this a lot more and in different ways than I thought I would.

    Howard Skempton - Feuille d'Album

    Joseph Kudirka - Grey

    Lauren Redhead - post-praeludium

    Michael Pisaro-Liu - Secular Reason

    Laurence Crane - Sparling

Do crank up the volume to hear Huw speaking before he plays.
