  1. Very nice! Flamboyant? Check! Technical? Check! Good for the ears? CHECK!
  2. Some of these pieces are wonderful! Thank you for sharing!
  3. For Paean, what about this speed? I agree with you! The tempo at 1:50 is 'just' right! Not to slow or fast, its a steady but outgoing tempo.
  4. What are flamboyant showpieces for the organ? I've been listening to a lot of organ music recently, hopefully this thread can enlighten me with more organ delicacies!
  5. Hate to say never been to Dunedin although I lived in Christchurch for a few years in the South Island of New Zealand. New Zealand known for its hidden treasures (gems of the golden age of British organ-building!) Norma is the nickname for this Hill, Norman & Beard giant in Dunedin Town Hall! 4 manuals and a grand design! Constantly looked after by the South Island pipe organ company, founded by workers of the Norman & Beard firm in the 1970s.
  6. The 'simple but with class' style case organ at the Savoy Chapel in London. Three manual Walker with a simple organ case design but clean/effective.
  7. I wonder about the same things over here. I know some sadly did not have the money to afford an organ case when it was commissioned or built but English organs are versatile and friendly to use! I think I would rather have a good sounding/playing organ that is ugly rather than a flamboyant looking horribly out of tune organ.
  8. I am currently working on a graded examination for organ and my teacher wishes me to focus on the exam repertoire but I am a believer of trying new music! I do apologise that I create threads and don't reply afterwards to signify my presence. The main reason for that is because I create threads to gain more information about a subject of interest and the thread seems to spiral outwards to other areas where my knowledge is limited to comment/reply about. I have a flair for grand organ fanfares which I believe that shows the capability and colours on offer of a palette of the organ. I did discover a 'Fanfare for John Bradley' by Francis Jackson of York Minster, which I have been learning by myself and wish to learn more of these greater fanfares.
  9. Does anyone any easy and good-to-hear fanfares for organ?
  10. Dear Mr Owen, That would be the current star of our school not me. I am merely an enthusiast of organ playing. The boy who won the Organ Club competition is an exceptional player at the organ.
  11. I don't know about anyone else here but I think elegantly painted pipes are just wonderful.
  12. What firms do you recommend for relocating pipe organs from churches throughout England? Any experience with relocations? If so, please post them below and share with us how it went like.
  13. Are there any hobby composers here or full-time composers around here? I am rather new to composing but I have high hopes in composing in the future. I would like to compose a simple piece of SATB music for a choir. Where should I start with this?
  14. What advice would you give to an organist who is learning the Widor Toccata from the 5th Symphony?
  15. I have just dipped into the world of classical English organs. Today, I tried out a 4 manual Harrison & Harrison, Durham organ and found it very different from the regular J.W.Walker that I play on. The Lewis & Co has its differences as well. I would like to know more 'good' English organ-builders. Would anyone like to share their experiences with a specific organ and from which maker? I spotted a Hill & Sons Organ in Wales on the Web and the sound it produces is beautiful. (Youtube did the sound job) I know the Father Willis organs are widely spoken of, which I did hear in the recent Albert Hall Organ celebration concert.
  16. What are some qualifications a organist could go for without completing any type of musical studies course at a institute? (For an example, a LRAM qualification is only for students who are doing a undergraduate or postgraduate students at the Royal Academy of Music, so excluding any qualifications like these which requires you to attend a course at a specific institute) I believe there are the following: (please reply below about the worthiness and experiences with these qualifications) - GRADE 1-8 (Trinity College or ABRSM) -CRCO -ARCO -LRCO -FRCO -ARSM (Quite a new addition) -DipARBSM -LRSM -FRSM -ATCL -LTCL -FTCL -ARCM (Not Available anymore?) -DipCHD (Choral Direction diploma for inspiring Directors of Music?) -LCM Qualifications (Didn't know these qualifications until a few years ago) -FRSA (Rather weird? Society of Arts Fellowship?)
  17. The South Pickenham organ has a rather beautiful case painting on it!
  18. I agree with your rules and those are some beautiful organs.
  19. Thank you for the 'as-always' great reply. I will probably all the books that you have suggested in the near future.
  20. Please do share any other books over 30 pounds, I will buy it with my own money if it is worth it.
  21. I won two prizes at my school which allows me to receive a book prize (just has to be under 30 quid). Are there any publications out there that are really helpful for an aspiring organist?
