  1. Anyone watch last week's episode of QI, the one with the German theme?

As usual it was erudite, witty and thoroughly amusing.

One of the topics they discussed was internet forums, in particular what happens when an arguement develops.

Someone appears to have calculated the number of posts it takes until the point is reached when members start refering to Hitler and the Nazis.

    141

  2. For the UK - no, I don't think so. On my list of top ten UK builders, only one makes their own pipes so far as I know. Terry Shires seems to be doing most of the serious work.

I think in mainland Europe where space is less of a premium and old buildings are re-used (take Aubertin's premises for instance, and the Metzler wood seasoning facility which enables them to have their own forest) the story may be slightly different.

In general, does it make the slightest difference whether scales and sizes and styles are being dictated to an in-house staff, or someone else's? Personally, I don't think it does.

I really wonder wether these selfmade pipes are better then a specilialised firm could provide. We're being told so, but is it really more than commercial talk?

W/Sh/Couldn't a specialised firm have better tools/machines, better 'production' processes, better skills due to the single type of work they do?

"Jack of all trades" keeps running in my head ...

  3. The booklet in the 3-disc set 'Organiste de Notre-Dame' is also quite informative, especially the bit by Loic Mallie:

If I remember correctly, he went into PC's office having to quit his studies for lack of finances upon which PC draw his chequebook.

    Enough said ...

  4. Not to offend our host, but the Willis company will build the 'Cathedral organ' for the protestant church in Leiden.

I think this will be the first instrument (based on exisiting Willis material) to be build by an English builder in Holland.

About time too, after already having seen an interesting collection of 'redundant' instrument making the migration this way.

  5. David Briggs, Worcester Cathedral

    Saturday 3rd October, 6.30pm

Dedication of Organ 1st Anniversary Recital, £15 on the door

    Programme:

JS Bach, trans. Briggs 2009: Orchestra Suite No 3 in D major

(i Overture. ii Air. iii Gavotte. iv Bouree. v Gigue)

Dukas, trans. Briggs 1996: The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Elgar, trans. Briggs 2009: Symphony No 1 in A flat, Opus 55

(i Andante, Nobilmente e semplice. ii Allegro molto. iii Adagio. iv Lento - Allegro.)

See you all there - large-screen projection (with pedal-cam) as usual!

    An interesting program this is.

Funny, the orchestral Hope-Jones gets scrapped for a 'proper' organrepertoire instrument, and now we play this.

    ...

  6. A very striking case, too, in my opinion.

They also added some tubas at the same time, I believe and, yes, there they are in the specification. Tubas seem to be becoming more and more popular in Germany. It must be because we joined the EU!

Really? looks more like 'auf Englisch' being the new vogue

  7. Just to throw a stone in the water - why do they want a console 'up there' in such a scheme?

For 'local' use in mass they'll probably use the hauptgenerallgesamttotalspieltisch, and for recitals one is supposed to do soundchecks 'down there'.

A console on the floor may also be more interesting for the public (and the player - soundbalance see St.Pauls' ?)

But anyway, nice to see a big organ being built - we'll do with tiny 2 manuals here ...

  8. Now I'm not given to testing CCCCs on a regular basis but it did strike me as odd. Is that normal? How quickly should a CCCC come to full volume, and to what extent does it depend on the stop (violone, contradiapason, stopped bourdon etc)?

Don't forget diaphones - speaking 'prompt', though (as some say) not blending ....
