Many years ago I heard a an organ concerto by Charles Chaynes. I thought it was fabulous, and am amazed and disappointed that I have never heard it again. It was similar to the Poulenc concerto in style, and I seem to recall seeing it in the UMP catalogue. I believe Marie Claire Alain used to have it in her repertoire ; I would love to hear it again if anyone knows of a recording or forthcoming performance.M
The Avant Garde Project has recently released a "BitTorrent" of the Chaynes Organ Concerto (AGP 136).

What exactly is so unpleasant about this work then and what did OR say about it? Anticipating answers along the lines of "it's just a horrible noise", in what ways is it a horrible noise? Genuine questions: I don't know the piece at all.I suppose the crucial question is: would those who like Stockhausen and Boulez also dislike it? A lot of ultra-modern organ music does not work well to my ears (though players should maybe share some of the blame), but some of it certainly does, given the right sort of organ, which tends not to be English Romantic ones. Ligeti and Berio come to mind.
It's interesting that the recording I mentioned (and I haven't heard it, to be fair) which is all English organ music, is played on a modern German organ. I might be wrong, but I think this is it...

If it's of any interest, a recording of the Organ Mass seems to be available

Thinks: Isn't the large four-decker at Walsall Town Hall mostly by N&L? [Not in good order last time I heard/played it.]The Walsall town hall organ is indeed originally by N&L. A recording of the organ played by the then borough organist, Harold Britton, is available - "Organ Extravaganza" on the ASV label. It's a nice sounding organ, but I can't help thinking that the addition of a Tibia section (in the 1980's) is rather incongruous.

I think it was Gillian Weir who said something along the lines of students shouldn't attempt the organ until they have at least one major piano concerto under their belt.

Jean Guillou recorded both the Reubke sonatas.

There seems to be other interesting material on the site (http://www.archive.org) - search for Organ
A few examples:
Notes on the Temple Organ (1911) (Edmund Macrory)
The Organ in France (Wallace Goodrich)
Bach's Organ Registration (W.L. Sumner)
Hope it's of some use.

Has anyone heard (or heard of) Hans Ludwig Schilling's "Integration B-A-C-H" (1961)? I've got a recording of this on an old LP performed by Konrad Schuba - the score is available from Breitkopf, but I've never seen any other recordings of it. It's an interesting piece, IMHO.

Maybe the problem is longevity?JJK
You may be right. I offered the link merely, and IMHO helpfully, as a pointer to those who might be interested, given that this is quite a difficult recording to find.

Yes, but it's been reissued on a Cd-R according to the site if you read about the recording......a bit second rate if you ask me!R
I haven't heard it, so I can't comment on the quality, though I'm not sure why CD-R media should be any different to CD?

Mmmmmaybe not! I got my Preston/Reubke/Liszt/DG CD from eBay for £23.00, albeit without the CD booklet. At the time, I thought this somewhat on the expensive side, but now think I got a bargain. I have repeatedly e-mailed DG to see if they have any plans to reissue the CD, but their answer has always been a resounding "Nein"!For anyone interested, a reissue of Simon Preston's recording of the 94th Psalm and Ad Nos, seems to be available (at a more sensible price) at Archiv Music.
