Can any one recommend a recording of the Six Preludes and Fugues of Saint-Saens? I have the scores, but would also be interested to know who else plays them, and which are the best starting points. Is there a good reason that they are not as widely known as the two Fantasies, or is it unjust neglect and should we all be slapping our wrists and tut-tutting at our repertoire lists

You could try here http://www.margaretphillips.org.uk/discography.htm where the 6 Preludes & Fugues are spread across two discs. I have one of these, and I enjoyed the playing very much. Recorded on the Exeter Cathedral organ before the recent work.

• Vincent Genvrin, complete organ works of Saint-Saëns, Hortus (4 CDs)
  
• Stephen Tharp at St-Sulpice, JAV (only the three P&Fs op.109)
  
• Odile Pierre has recorded all six at her (then) organ of La Madeleine in 1972, but that one never made it to CD, sadly

I have a four-CD box set, Saint-Saens Complete Organ Works played by Stefan Johannes Bleicher on the low price Arte Nova label, I don't know if it's still available. Its interest to me is that it includes works which are rarely if ever played, maybe in a few cases justifiably, but overall I think it's a good set.

We discussed that set a while back here. Although I am not particularly gripped with the set, I think the Preludes and Fugues are among the most successful tracks.

I recorded these at one point.... apologies for the recording quality - I was just experimenting with microphone placement and such... my further efforts are somwhat better, I hope
