Duets

Recommended Posts

I think I've asked before, but I'll try again as I need to pull together a duet recital for two months' time.

Anyone know of where duet scores can be obtained - you often see things on programmes like the Planets suite arranged for two people at one organ - also stuff for two organs. Very keen (actually slightly desperate) to get hold of ideas, links, scores...

The Wesley and Soler works are well known, but I recall a Fugue in E minor by Schubert for organ duet. There is no reference to it in Grove. I think Robert Munns played it a one time. Perhaps someone can help with more information.

The Planets Suite was played by William McVicker and Jeremy Barham. Holst set it for piano duet in the course of composing it, presumably as an experiment. That duet version would be a good start.

I vaguely recall a duet by Tomkins. Again, perhaps someone has a copy.

There is indeed a duet by Tomkins - it's in the Musica Britannica volume of his keyboard music, but I'm not sure whether there's a more readily accessible edition. There's also another Tudor one by Nicholas Carleton which was (is?) published by Schott.

Drop Maureen McAllister and Robin Jackson a line.

There's quite a lot. Try this list as a starting point. It seems pretty accurate though for some reason all the Chenault Duet Library entries are listed as Vol1.

Not listed there but in print (as far as I know) are: Langlais Mosaiques Vols 1 & 3 (each contains a Fantasie for two organs); Litaize Pentecote (Tryptyque for 2 Organs) and Reveyron Anapese (all via UMP).

There are two works by Alan Gibbs: Hertford Sonata & Doubles - both published by Bardic. I think he has written more.

I'm sure the Chenaults will have a number of m/s arrangments.

Stainer & Bell will probably sell you an offprint.
