Any info about the new organ? I remember the previous one when it was new - an extension job by Ralph Arnold (they had a 4 manual pipe organ in Sevenoaks parish church in those days, too!).

The new organ is a combination organ by MPOS Ltd. Info on their website and also on the church website. Hoping to try it for myself soon.

Ourania Gassiou was born in Athens and studied the piano at the Nakas Conservatory and the organ at the Athens Concert Hall.

In 2004 she received an entrance scholarship to study under Nicolas Kynaston at the Royal Academy of Music. Whilst at the Academy she was awarded several of the major prizes and awards, including the DipRAM, the most prestigious award for an outstanding final recital. She was also nominated as the Pidem Organ Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music.

In 2006 she was awarded the Eric Thompson Trust Grant to continue her studies with Johannes Geffert in Cologne and Susan Landale in London.

She has been a prize winner in the International Organ Competition of St.Maurice, Switzerland and in the First Mediterranean Piano Competition of Andros.

Ourania maintains a busy schedule as a soloist and ensemble player. She has performed in several venues in the UK, Greece, Germany, Sweden, Spain and Slovakia. She has also participated in a recording project of the Royal Academy of Music with music by English composers.

Ιn 2011 she was appointed Organist of the Athens Concert Hall and she is also the organist of the French Protestant Church in London.

THE ORGAN

The first organ to be installed in St. Francis’ was a redundant instrument obtained from a church in Norwich in 1957. Although bearing the label of Norman & Beard Ltd. (of Norwich) and the date 1912, it was found on dismantling to have been based on earlier material, which to some extent accounted for the poor condition in recent times. Its small size (3 Great, 4 Swell, 1 Pedal) may have been just about sufficient in St Francis’ as first built, but in the enlarged church it was quite inadequate.

The replacement organ was obtained in 2011 from Monyash Methodist Church, to which it had been moved 40 years earlier from its previous home at Darlaston Green, near Walsall. Though not carrying any builder’s label, it is without doubt a product of Nicholson & Lord (of Walsall). Its construction clearly indicates that it was begun as a 1-manual, with the Swell added on behind at a very early stage, perhaps even before it left the factory. The serial number 422, marked on pipework of both manuals, is consistent with the date 1884 found on the centre display pipe.

As built there were two “prepared” stops on the Great and one on the Swell; by the time the organ reached Monyash pipework had been supplied to all except the 2’ stop on the Great; other alterations made over the years included conversion of the Pedal to pneumatic action, reconstruction of the console, provision of a balanced swell and removal of the hand blowing apparatus.

In the programme of work completed at Easter 2013 the working parts of the organ have been fully restored, and the console returned to its original format (apart from the balanced swell pedal, which has been reworked). The three originally prepared slides are all now occupied by upperwork (previously entirely absent).

Born in London in 1983, David Pipe read Music at Cambridge University as Organ Scholar of Downing

College, later studying organ at the Royal Academy of Music. His organ teachers have included David

Titterington, Susan Landale and Lionel Rogg.

David appears regularly as an organ recitalist, accompanist and conductor. Recent recitals have include

Westminster Abbey and Westminster Cathedral, as well as tours to the USA; he recently performed

Poulenc’s Organ Concerto with Sheffield Symphony Orchestra. He has worked as both organist and

conductor on BBC television and radio, and has featured on several recordings as organist and continuo

player. His first solo recording, a disc of original organ works and transcriptions by Liszt and Brahms,

was released last year to critical acclaim on the SFZ Music label. It was previewed on Radio 3’s

In Tune programme and voted Record of the Month by MusicWeb International. David became

Principal Conductor of York Musical Society in April 2012, and has conducted them in works

including Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem and Bach’s St Matthew Passion.

David came to work at York Minster in September 2008, and was appointed Assistant Director

of Music in September 2010. He performs regularly with local groups and is increasingly in demand

as a teacher.

Norman Harper was organ scholar at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and is now organist

and director of the Girls’ Choir at St George’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Southwark. In addition to his CD

recordings, he has performed as soloist in many of the major venues in the UK, including St Paul’s

Cathedral, St John’s College and King’s College Cambridge, the Temple Church, St Dominic’s Priory,

Coventry Cathedral and Southwark Anglican Cathedral, as well as in Germany, France, Estonia, the

Czech Republic, Australia and the USA. He has broadcast solo recitals on BBC Radio 3 and

accompanied numerous choral services on BBC Radio and TV.

Several years ago, when Justason was Justoutofnappies, he was asked to dep for a depping choir at Kingston Parish Church for a service of Evensong. Justamum and I turned up with Justason on the preceding Saturday so he could familiarise himself with the Frobenius, only to find someone sat on the bench doing their stuff. I hesitantly explained that Justason had to prepare for a service the next day, and the gentleman kindly removed himself. Some weeks later I learned that the kind gentleman was, indeed, Christopher Herrick: a gentleman indeed, and a very fine organist.

I don't know what the programme is but I hope you'll consider joining Justamum and I on Wednesday.

Tom Bell enjoys a varied freelance solo career as an organist, based in London

and active across the UK. He has played additionally in mainland Europe and the

USA, undertaking two tours to the latter encompassing the East Coast and Mid West

in 2013. Tom's debut CD, featuring music by Bliss, Elgar and Malcolm Williamson

recently was released on the Regent label, and was described by one reviewer as

"...a marvellous recording, full of light, from a charismatic and virtuosic musician"

(Organists' Review). His performance on the same disc of Williamson's unjustly

neglected Symphony for Organ was described in American Record Guide as

"brilliant". Tom's playing has been heard on the radio in the UK, Europe and the

United States, including (from the Temple Church in London) a live solo recital on

Dutch Radio 4 as part of their Handel Day, 2009. Highlights in 2014 include the

release of a double CD of contemporary music, the formation of a duo with organist

Richard Brasier, and his debut at the Royal Festival Hall, London as a featured artist

in the Pull Out All The Stops festival. Tom will give two concerts at the RFH, both to

be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and featuring first performances of works by Neil

Hannon and Shlomo.

Tom teaches in a freelance capacity for the Royal College of Organists, and also

on courses run by the Royal School of Church Music and Oundle for Organists,

for whom he will direct a course in 2014. He is organ tutor both at Sevenoaks

School and the Royal Hospital School in Suffolk, and regularly gives masterclasses

(recently Birmingham Conservatoire and the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia). A

passion for education and outreach has led to involvement with many different

schemes, and he is organist to the long-running Organworks project, based at

Eton. Tom is Artistic Director to the London Organ Day, a trustee of the ON Organ

Fund, and serves as Organist and Choir Master at St Michael's Church, Chester

Square in central London. He also writes occasionally, and his work has been

published in BBC Music Magazine, Organists' Review and others.

Tom studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Kevin Bowyer, also

travelling to Amsterdam to see Jacques van Oortmerssen on an occasional basis.

His repertoire is broad but he harbours a particular love of new music, something

which has led him to premiere many pieces in the last few years. Besides tea

drinking he likes fell walking, good beer and (most of all) steam locomotives.

Luke Bond is currently Assistant Director of Music at Truro Cathedral where

he works with the Cathedral Choir in its six choral services per week and also

accompanies the Choir in broadcasts, tours and recordings on the Cathedral's

famous Father Willis organ.

He grew-up in Gloucester and became the Cathedral Organ Scholar aged 17,

studying with David Briggs. Subsequent posts were held at Bristol Cathedral,

St Mary's Church, Warwick and Clifton College. In Truro Luke also directs St

Mary's Singers and Orchestra with whom he has programmed a diverse

repertoire of works from Stravinsky's Dumbarton Oaks to Copland's Old

American Songs. The choir recently performed Bach's St Matthew Passion in

a liturgical context.

He works regularly as organ and piano accompanist, most recently with Julia

Hwang (BBC4 Lark Ascending) and Grace Davidson (in Handel's Gloria). Luke

is collaborating with the trumpeter Ross Brown in a programme of new trumpet

and organ transcriptions for publication and recording on the Regent Label,

with whom he made a solo organ disc last year which has received numerous

five star reviews.

Luke has given first performances of works by numerous composers, most recently

works by David Bednall and Paul Drayton. Luke recently accompanied the first

broadcast of Julian Philips' anthem Church Music (from Choirbook for the Queen).

His freelance work takes him out of Truro and often includes being Organist on the

Eton Choral Course, and working with Andrew Nethsingha on a summer course in

Chinon, France, and a tour to Sweden in 2014.
