wolsey 0
The appointment of Rachel Mahon as Organ Scolar at St Paul's Cathedral merited a photograph in The Times last week. There was also a rather silly headline in Norman Lebrecht's blog (http://www.artsjournal.com/slippeddisc/2014/03/shock-in-cloisters-as-st-pauls-cathedral-appoints-a-woman-organ-scholar.html) about 'shock in cloisters'. When one considers that there are female cathedral organists in the UK; Jane Watts was organ scholar at Westminster Abbey in the mid-1980s; the Chapter of St Paul's includes two female canons, why is this a 'shock in cloisters'? Incidentally, does St Paul's have cloisters?

What it does have (on the North side) is a rather nice vista across the re-modelled Paternoster Square. http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=paternoster+square&nord=1&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=WLhCU5rVCIud7QbvvoD4Dg&sqi=2&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAg&biw=1920&bih=

David Drinkell 0
The organ at which the two lovely young ladies are posing is the Casavant in the Metropolitan United Church, Toronto, the biggest organ in Canada. It's a wonderful beast - very lush and Romantic....

David Drinkell 0
Hmmm - they get up to some very odd things in the United Church these days. Maybe that includes using strange pipes.

Vox Humana 0
Canon Peter Gould has announced his retirement as Master of the Music at Derby Cathedral, to take effect from 6th January 2015. Isn't this is just a little premature? A new canon precentor was installed recently - one who has excellent musical credentials (Oxford BMus and choral scholar; sang on the first Tallis Scholars LP), but also one who is also keen to embrace "approachable" styles. Coincidence?

Coincidence? Why 'premature'? Peter Gould (now 62) was appointed to Derby in 1983. By any reckoning, he has had a very long and successful tenure there.
Vox Humana 0
Of course he has and the last Evensong I heard there was very fine indeed, by any standards. For the record, I was merely musing, not accusing.
