I happened to turn on the wireless, to discover that Mrs DRD had left it tuned to Radio Four! just about to stab the switch off again, because it was the normally intensely boring "You and Yours", when on came an item engendered by the recent ruling on the employment status of organists. A very interesting item indeed, well-presented, with adequate interviews, and a stimulating set of discussions. Well done all who took part. I was particularly interested in the RC spokesperson, since I spent 4 years in a seminary myself and thought my organ playing was encouiraged (I was in fact the main colege organist for a few years) there was no formal training given of the kind spoken about today, such as the integral nature of myusic in the liturgy. Our Barry Williams came across as expected, erudite and knowledgeable althought I was sorry that he was not joint-credited as author of Everything Else.... Barry Williams Many years ago, when a tuner in South Wales, (c 1959) I wrote to Lampeter (our local parson factory) suggesting that one lesson ought tp be dedicated to the care and maintenance of organs in the ordinand's training. Barry Williams I too heard the broadcast, my wife having alerted me from the deepest, darkest depths of the school playground, where, apparently using a mobile phone is a Capital offence! The broadcast was both informative and objective, often in stark contrast with many of the debates held on radio 4 recently! My thanks to those who gave up their time to promote our cause! In the past couple of weeks Robert and I have appeared on or been involved with quite a few broadcasts and articles on the matter of organists' rights in law. This Saturday we will be speaking at the London Organ Day. There is little doubt that organists give much and are not always well treated. Learning to play the organ is expensive, (it cost me far more to get professional music diplomas, etc than to get a pilot's licence,) and demands many long hours in cold churches, (if one can get access.) The thing that irritates me most is the suggestion that musical skill 'Has been given by God.' Until my parents paid for piano lessons and organ lessons my 'God given talent' was useless - if there ever was any! (When the Almighty came to handing out natural skills he passed me by, save for one thing - not music - quite useless!) The reality is that all of us have had to pay for tuition, organ practice, examinations and music. Robert and I have often been asked about organists' salary scales and the Competition Act. It has been suggested (I think, by the ISM,) that the publication of suggested scales is a practice outlawed by the Competition Act. We do not agree and see no objection to this, provided it is merely a suggestion rather than a price fixing. The RSCM publishes scales (for members only) that make a useful reference point. Was the first such salary scale called the 'Ashfield Scale' after the late Dr Robert Ashfield? Board members may be interested to know that one IME (Initial Ministerial Education) Course hands out copies of 'Everything Else and Organist Should Know' to all ordinands as part of their training.
