A New Minster In Yorkshire

I don't know if any of you are aware but on Sunday November 22nd, Halifax Parish Church becomes Halifax Minster. While it doesn't quite right the historical mistake of putting the diocesan cathedral in Wakefield, it certainly does seem to be part of a wider effort to raise the profile of this beautiful church.

My words....golly gosh.....

I think I will now work on my (excellent) impression of Francis Jackson:-

"Hellow.....I remember when I was at the Minster......"

The greatly loved and missed Charles MacDonald used to regail visitors to his music shop with wonderful imitations of Francis Jackson. On the other hand, I'm told that FJ does very amusing impressions of himself.

I more or less grew up with Charles MacDonald, who lived in the next town. When he went to York Minster as organ-scholar, he obtained a flat overlooking the main shopping street by the Minster. On a sunny afternoon, he would often sit on a small balcony with a drink in his hand, and greet complete strangers on the street in his wonderful "FJ" impression. It was a source of endless amusement.

As for "FJ" doing "impressions" of himself, I think he was always slightly alarmed but proud of the fact that so many people actually did impressions of him.

Always the perfect gentleman, he certainly has a sense of humour and has never taken his public persona too seriously.

The Bishop duly re-dedicated the church as The Minster Church of St John the Baptist, Halifax, at yesterday morning's service in the presence of a full church. Musical accompaniment was provided by the parish choir, Halifax Choral Society, Minster Brass and the mighty Harrison, played by Mr P C Tordoff presiding.

An appeal has been launched to raise £1,000,000 for various works including a full overhaul of the organ.

Interesting how a full congregation absorbs the sound. The tuba, which is overpowering in an empty church, is merely loud when there is a full house. Mind you, the representatives of Other Churches and Faiths who were seated immediately in front of it, will have had the full benefit of it and the other high-pressure reeds.
