Willis Open Day

Recommended Posts

I see that Willis Organs have an open day coming up in November http://www.willis-organs.com. The Auckland job will be well worth seeing judging by the pics on their site.

Hi

Well worth a visit. I've been a couple of times, twice when our organ was in the works, and I arranged for a small group from the Bradford Organists' Association to go. Fascinating (as are all organ builder's workshops). I understand that the Aukland job is well under way.

Every Blessing

Tony

:) sigh...............why do I get that feeling that this posting regarding a Willis open day is now going to deviate into something unpleasant?

If we want another Mander open day, then start a new post for it please.

It needn't deviate into anything.

I would love to be there, but will be on hols in America - but one thing is certain and that is that there will be a wonderful welcome in Liverpool.

Sorry we won't see you Quentin.

What MPK didn't say and what isn't announced on our website is that we've commissioned a Special Brew from the George Wright Brewery in St. Helens, for the occasion and this will be administered free-of-charge to needy travellers! Any members intending to come might therefore consider the train!! :o

Why do we need to start a new post when I have responded to one open day with a request for another one ?

It seems to me that some people just want to make trouble.

I live in London and Manders are situated in London, so that makes sense for me not to travel all the way to Liverpool with the cost of travel these days.

Yes we do want another Mander open day please, so you travel to Liverpool if you want.and sigh

all you want on the journey up there.

This is a thread titled and about Willis Open Day. For practical reasons that should be obvious other Open Days would be best discussed in another thread. It's not as if new threads are expensive or difficult to start. Or to delete if people can't be civil. :P

A bonus! I'll get my long-suffering wife to drive!

A question, if I may, which may be of interest to others as well. Is there somewhere convenient to park nearby?

I find Liverpool quite good for parking off the main thoroughfares, the only difference being that you have to pay a parking-fee to the locals kids, who will then watch your hub-caps/alloy-wheels for you. :P

Oh dear. Luckily, I drive a Skoda. Yes, really, I do! I bought it on the grounds that no-one would be interested in nicking it and so far, touch wood, it has worked. Despite that, it's the best car I have ever owned.

Seriously, I have looked at the local area on Google Earth but, unfortunately, car parks are not a feature of that programme.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear - the stereo-type for Liverpool isn't accurate these days I'm afraid, especially for the City Centre, basically quite close to where we are. Your car will be safer here than in many other places even according to 'official' statistics for car crime: apparently Manchester, London and Birmingham are worse, by far.

As to parking here: there are about 15 spaces on the main road (St. Anne Street) at the front of the building, you can park all the way up the street to the left side of the building (Birkett Street), there is also then the road which runs round the back of the building to our loading entrance (Mansfield Street) and if all that space is occupied, there is Richmond Row, which is 50 yards to the left of the building in St. Anne Street.

Visitors might also like to know that we are 6-8 minute's walk from Lime Street Station, St. George's Hall, The Walker Art Gallery etc..

For years there has been a long standing comment from comedians that you will lose your car wheels if you park in Liverpool, but I am sure that this is no different to anywhere else !

Guest Geoff McMahon

We will most certainly be holding an open day at some point in the not too distant future, but at the moment we are too hard pressed to organise anything. We would certainly announce it here if we do.

Many thanks for the information, and for putting on the open day.

Despite MM's comments, I have no worries about leaving my car unattended! Last time I was there, Liverpool seemed to be a very friendly place.

Somewhat off topic, I once had a stolen Escort convertible parked/dumped outside my house. Within a day, bonnet, engine, wheels, one door and registration plate had disappeared. When I reported it to the council they said they couldn't do anything about it as it didn't have a registration plate!

If all else fails, there are several large carparks near the university hospital that I've used in the past that look to be a few minutes' walk from the factory.

I and many others look forward to that John, and await to hear the relevant dates.

You made us very welcome on the last occasion, and we were all impressed with your full order book !

When I was flying the watchword was to avoid over-flying Liverpool, lest one lose ones undercarriage.

Thats a good one, how true even today (taken from Round the Horne)

Colin Richell.

And if you ever fly over Congo that very probably will be true! (Still getting over hearing that a recent plane crash was caused by a live crocodile escaping from a passenger's carry-on luggage - goodness only knows what's been sharing the cabin with me when I've been flying around there!)

Got a name yet David? What about "Old Father Henry"? :o

This, of course, refers to the name of The Ale. Actually, it's gone a little further than we expected, as there will now be TWO different brews:

1. 'Cheeky Pheasant'

2. 'Pipe Dreams'

This is the trouble with leaving arrangements in the hands of the shop floor! :o

Although no connoisseur of ale, I did enjoy the one I had (which actually appeared to be called Rotunda).

And thanks to David for letting us in to poke around and explore the factory - it was a fascinating day, and I enjoyed the company as well.

May I also offer my thanks to David and his colleagues for a very interesting visit to the organ factory and, of course, for the excellent beer. I had a half of each and thought the Rotunda was the better of the two.

I'd like to thank, in particular, Joji Shiga who gave us (I dragged along my long-suffering wife) a very informative tour of the metal shop.

I was interested, by the way, to see that Willis seem to do a sideline in Rolls Royces!

Thanks, David, for a very enjoyable day.
