David Drinkell
A refreshingly new response to worship music is found in the following report from an Oklahoma City radio station: EDMOND, Okla. — Most churches encourage praise and worship. In fact, the Bible states, “make a joyful noise to the Lord.” But 50-year-old Vickey Sue Beyersdorfer apparently went a bit too far. Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Department Spokesman Mark Myers said, “Nobody could pay attention to the sermon or what was going on so that’s when our deputy was able to take care of the situation.” The religious ruckus happened at Victory Church at 1515 N. Kelly Ave in Edmond. A woman was apparently playing a tambourine too loudly during Wednesday night services. When she refused to stop, the woman was escorted out by an off duty Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Deputy. Myers said, “He had to physically escort her outside the church. Once outside, she broke free from the deputy and tried to go back inside, there became a physical confrontation.” According to the arrest report, the deputy was forced to pepper spray and tase the unruly woman. Myers said, “She was not filled with the Holy spirit. She was not being very Christianly and this is why the folks decided to get her out as soon as possible.” Witnesses said the combative Christian was staggering and had slurred speech. Authorities did find prescription pain medication in her possession. Authorities have not said if that medication was found in her system or if that may have contributed to the incident. Vox Humana
Ooh, Sir, please, Sir, can I have a taser too? On second thoughts, you don't want to let me loose in a church with a taser, you really don't...
handsoff
Is a single taser enough for the whole bangs and twangs music group? Not that my church has one, but just in case I happen to find one...
nachthorn
"Christianly"?
CTT
Did anyone notice the implications that the deputy was wearing his weapons during a church service... It adds a whole new meaning to the old term muscular Christianity. The only other occasion I recall of something like this happening was a report about three or four years ago when a naked man welding a sword disrupted a Sunday morning service (I think it was in the UK). An off duty policeman took up a front pipe to disarm the man!

It adds a whole new meaning to the old term muscular Christianity. ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ I noticed that too. Of course security men often carry a weapon in church. I remember Bernadette Chirac coming to church in Birmingham one Sunday, complete with fairly unobtrusive, security men. They sat so that they had a good view of her and the proceedings but it was obvious who they were. I was reading the first lesson and my wife told me that they got distinctly edgy when I left my place in the Nave and walked towards the lectern, pausing close to where she was sitting to acknowledge the altar. Watch the procession of Benedict XVI going down the Nave of Westminster Abbey during his visit in 2010 - the Vatican security men not unobtrusive at all and the way their jackets are open leads me to suspect that they have more than their handkerchiefs in the pockets! I accept the security implications - but both occasions made me feel distinctly uncomfortable!
Contrabombarde
Nothging new under the sun I'm afraid: II Samuel 6 5David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals....16As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart. Much as some despise the instrument, there is Biblical prececendence for exuberant use of the tambourine - and a slapped wrist from an embarressed wife at the end of the day. To have tazered someone the poor congregation must have been desperate though! Contrabombarde
innate
I agree with Contrabombarde on the biblical precedent, nay, imperative for the use of the tambourine. Given that even some players of the drum kit are less than positive about the tambourine as a musical instrument I wondered about extremely musical uses of it in worship. I never heard it but Simon Preston persuaded a lay clerk to play tambourine in John Gardner's Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day; given the unerring taste of both the conductor and lay clerk, it must have been both effective and aesthetic. Can anyone provide further examples?
