DaveHarries
Didn't one of his predecessor only last a few days because his vertigo couldn't cope with the organ loft? Ian Yes. I think that was Roger Sayer. It was mentioned in an interview that Choir & Organ magazine did with him some years back. Dave
Jim Treloar
It was indeed Roger Sayer - have you been in the organ loft at Chester?
David Drinkell
Yes - I can think of a lot of worse ones! Both the Dublin cathedrals, Liverpool, Bury, St. Paul's (not so much the height as the nearness of the stool to the parapet).....
pcnd5584
It was indeed Roger Sayer - have you been in the organ loft at Chester? Yes - I played for a long week-end of services for a visiting choir a couple of summers ago, with no problems whatsoever. I am fortunate in not suffering from acrophobia. However, I can sympathise with those who do.
pcnd5584
Didn't one of his predecessor only last a few days because his vertigo couldn't cope with the organ loft? Ian Or even acrophobia. One could suffer from vertigo in a cellar....

DaveHarries
James Lancelot is retiring from Durham this August More here: https://www.durhamcathedral.co.uk/news/james-lancelot-retirement I didn't realise that he had been there more than 30 years. Sounds like a well-earned retirement to me. If I was a betting man (which I am not) then I would lay a fiver on him becoming organist emeritus in recognition of his long service at Durham. Barry Oakley
David Poulter............... I can't believe that the Liverpool Cathedral website is apparently so out of date, but interestingly the list of organists ceases at the name of Ian Tracey, against which it states: 1988 to Present. There is no mention of David Poulter.
DHM
David Poulter is Director of Music. Prof Ian Tracey is Organist Titulaire. Both are listed on the Cathedral's staff page here: http://www.liverpoolcathedral.org.uk/home/about-us/cathedral-people/staff.aspx.

Vox Humana
I must say that, although I appreciate the reasons, I find the structure of Director of Music + Organist and/or Assistant DoM rather more ambiguous than the previous, almost universal Organist and Choirmaster + Assistant (or Sub-) Organist structure. At least the hierarchy in the old system was more obvious. Maybe that was the problem. After all, Prof Tracey is not to be considered any lesser a musician than Mr Poulter. Dave Yes, James has done a splendid job at Durham. They have already honoured him by making him a Canon, but Emeritus would be thoroughly deserved. David Cynan Jones
This from Southwell this morning https://www.facebook.com/SouthwellMinster/?hc_ref=PAGES_TIMELINE&fref=nf We are delighted to announce the appointment of our new Rector Chori - Paul Provost, currently Sub Organist at Guildford Cathedral. Paul, who is married to Ruth and has a six-month old daughter, has worked with some of the country’s leading ensembles, and in Europe and the USA. “We are very much looking forward to the move to Southwell, a place for which we have great affection,” said Paul. “I am in particular excited by the musical opportunities and possibilities for development, encouraged by the generosity and friendliness of all I have met so far.” Dean Nicola Sullivan said: "I am delighted at Paul's appointment. He is a creative and skilful choir trainer with a strong sense of faith and vision for how musical excellence supports the mission and worshipping life of a Cathedral. He is keen to promote music more widely across the diocese and will build on the excellence of the Music Foundation already here." The announcement was made today (Jan 29th) during the Patronal Festival Eucharist and Procession at the Minster. Paul, who moves to Southwell after Easter, replaces Paul Hale who recently retired after 27 years as Rector Chori.

Positif
Tom Corns is moving from Warwick to be the new #1 at Sheffield Cathedral Interesting. A step up, or sideways? I understand the choirs at Warwick are very highly regarded.
Martin Cooke
Interesting. A step up, or sideways? I understand the choirs at Warwick are very highly regarded. I would have thought it was a step up. St Mary's Warwick straight to a senior cathedral post...? I doubt it... but going via Sheffield seems much more likely to meet with success. Simon Lole made this exact same move and went from Sheffield to Salisbury.

David.Dewar
Yes, Carlisle Cathedral has placed an advertisement in the CT and on its website! How massively enterprising. In neither instance is there any more information other than an instruction to ask separately for it - in other words, a further step and delay, I would not wish to apply for it, even if I thought I might be eligible. But, why do these cathedrals think they need to be so coy? It has overtones of arrogance - making even enquirers, let alone applicants, jump through unnecessary hoops just, possibly, to satisfy some pointless bureaucracy within the supplicant establishment's management. Ridiculous. They need organists (Ds of M) rather more than we need them.
Vox Humana
But, why do these cathedrals think they need to be so coy? Well at least you can't accuse Durham of that. (Not that you are, of course. )
