pcnd5584 Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 Didn't one of his predecessor only last a few days because his vertigo couldn't cope with the organ loft? Ian Or even acrophobia. One could suffer from vertigo in a cellar....
DHM Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 According to a post on his Facebook page today, Luke Bond will move from Truro to Windsor as Asst DoM in Holy Week 2017.
Jim Treloar Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 I am reliably informed that David Poulter is to leave Liverpool as DoM.
sirusnantwich Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 James Lancelot is retiring from Durham this August
DaveHarries Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 James Lancelot is retiring from Durham this August More here: https://www.durhamcathedral.co.uk/news/james-lancelot-retirement I didn't realise that he had been there more than 30 years. Sounds like a well-earned retirement to me. If I was a betting man (which I am not) then I would lay a fiver on him becoming organist emeritus in recognition of his long service at Durham. Dave
Barry Oakley Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 David Poulter............... I can't believe that the Liverpool Cathedral website is apparently so out of date, but interestingly the list of organists ceases at the name of Ian Tracey, against which it states: 1988 to Present. There is no mention of David Poulter.
DHM Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 David Poulter is Director of Music. Prof Ian Tracey is Organist Titulaire. Both are listed on the Cathedral's staff page here: http://www.liverpoolcathedral.org.uk/home/about-us/cathedral-people/staff.aspx.
Barry Oakley Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 http://www.liverpoolcathedral.org.uk/home/cathedral-music/our-organ.aspx
Vox Humana Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 I must say that, although I appreciate the reasons, I find the structure of Director of Music + Organist and/or Assistant DoM rather more ambiguous than the previous, almost universal Organist and Choirmaster + Assistant (or Sub-) Organist structure. At least the hierarchy in the old system was more obvious. Maybe that was the problem. After all, Prof Tracey is not to be considered any lesser a musician than Mr Poulter.
David Drinkell Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 More here: https://www.durhamcathedral.co.uk/news/james-lancelot-retirement I didn't realise that he had been there more than 30 years. Sounds like a well-earned retirement to me. If I was a betting man (which I am not) then I would lay a fiver on him becoming organist emeritus in recognition of his long service at Durham. Dave Yes, James has done a splendid job at Durham. They have already honoured him by making him a Canon, but Emeritus would be thoroughly deserved.
David Cynan Jones Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 This from Southwell this morning https://www.facebook.com/SouthwellMinster/?hc_ref=PAGES_TIMELINE&fref=nf We are delighted to announce the appointment of our new Rector Chori - Paul Provost, currently Sub Organist at Guildford Cathedral. Paul, who is married to Ruth and has a six-month old daughter, has worked with some of the country’s leading ensembles, and in Europe and the USA. “We are very much looking forward to the move to Southwell, a place for which we have great affection,” said Paul. “I am in particular excited by the musical opportunities and possibilities for development, encouraged by the generosity and friendliness of all I have met so far.” Dean Nicola Sullivan said: "I am delighted at Paul's appointment. He is a creative and skilful choir trainer with a strong sense of faith and vision for how musical excellence supports the mission and worshipping life of a Cathedral. He is keen to promote music more widely across the diocese and will build on the excellence of the Music Foundation already here." The announcement was made today (Jan 29th) during the Patronal Festival Eucharist and Procession at the Minster. Paul, who moves to Southwell after Easter, replaces Paul Hale who recently retired after 27 years as Rector Chori.
Martin Cooke Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Truro Cathedral announced yesterday the appointment of Joseph Wicks as Assistant Director of Music. Joseph is presently Assistant Organist of St John's College, Cambridge.
David Cynan Jones Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 Not strictly and appointment but will lead to one I presume http://www.liverpoolcathedral.org.uk/43/section.aspx/37/end_of_an_era_for_our_director_of_music_david_poulter
sirusnantwich Posted February 5, 2017 Posted February 5, 2017 Tom Corns is moving from Warwick to be the new #1 at Sheffield Cathedral
Positif Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Tom Corns is moving from Warwick to be the new #1 at Sheffield Cathedral Interesting. A step up, or sideways? I understand the choirs at Warwick are very highly regarded.
Martin Cooke Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 Interesting. A step up, or sideways? I understand the choirs at Warwick are very highly regarded. I would have thought it was a step up. St Mary's Warwick straight to a senior cathedral post...? I doubt it... but going via Sheffield seems much more likely to meet with success. Simon Lole made this exact same move and went from Sheffield to Salisbury.
Arp Schnitger Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 Durham now advertising: https://www.durhamcathedral.co.uk/beinvolved/employment/master-of-choristers-and-organist
David.Dewar Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 Yes, Carlisle Cathedral has placed an advertisement in the CT and on its website! How massively enterprising. In neither instance is there any more information other than an instruction to ask separately for it - in other words, a further step and delay, I would not wish to apply for it, even if I thought I might be eligible. But, why do these cathedrals think they need to be so coy? It has overtones of arrogance - making even enquirers, let alone applicants, jump through unnecessary hoops just, possibly, to satisfy some pointless bureaucracy within the supplicant establishment's management. Ridiculous. They need organists (Ds of M) rather more than we need them.
Vox Humana Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 But, why do these cathedrals think they need to be so coy? Well at least you can't accuse Durham of that. (Not that you are, of course. )
DaveHarries Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 Durham Cathedral's website now carries an advertisement for the Master of Choristers & Organist job. No doubt the field of candidates will be quite a strong one. https://www.durhamcathedral.co.uk/news/organist-job Dave
wolsey Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 Durham Cathedral's website now carries an advertisement for the Master of Choristers & Organist job. No doubt the field of candidates will be quite a strong one. https://www.durhamcathedral.co.uk/news/organist-job Dave Daniel Cook succeeds Canon James Lancelot.
DaveHarries Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Daniel Cook succeeds Canon James Lancelot. Good appointment: best of luck to Mr. Cook. I wonder if Canon James will end up as emeritus in recognition of his long service. Dave
sbarber49 Posted April 3, 2017 Author Posted April 3, 2017 Mark Duthie to move from Brecon to Carlisle. http://swanseaandbrecon.churchinwales.org.uk/news/2017/04/end-of-a-cathedral-era-as-music-director-moves-on/
Positif Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 I wonder what's going on in Warwick. Mr Corns' appointment to Sheffield was announced in February, with effect from June, but no signs of advertisement as yet. A long interregnum seems inevitable!
