Dafydd y Garreg Wen
It's Our Lady of Sorrows next Tuesday. I know the Demessieux setting of the Stabat Mater chant. Any other pieces based on this that members recommend? Or other Marian pieces that are of a suitably dolorous character? I shall be playing a small two-manual instrument, but should be interested for future reference to hear of pieces too that require something larger. I suppose that music relating to Candlemass might also be appropriate ("Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also").
Brizzle
There’s a very pleasant ‘Variations and Fugue’ by Guilmant: http://ks4.imslp.net/files/imglnks/usimg/e/ea/IMSLP03926-GuilmantL'OrganisteLiturgisteLivre3Op65.pdf B
sjf1967
The Suite Mariale by de Maleingreau has a ‘Sept Douleurs’ movement. It’s still in print (and in copyright)... but you may find it takes a while to get hold of it.
S_L
I have a ceremony to play the organ for next Tuesday - it's for the installation of a Hermit within the Archdiocese of Bordeaux. I was planning to improvise on the sequence 'Stabat Mater dolorosa' (page 1634 - Liber Usualis) - the phrasing and structure of the sequence does rather lend itself to an improvisation
sjf1967
And I think there’s a piece by Daniel Roth, Joies, douleurs et gloire de Marie - I’ve never played it though....
Vox Humana
The first movement of Messiaen's Les Corps Glorieux is based on the Salve regina - not that you'd recognise it simply by listening.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_NGyXvyER4&pp=QAA%3D
sbarber49
There's a Stabat Mater by Dandrieu (on IMSLP) - not very solemn, though. There's a simple but, I think, very effective Salve Regina by Dupre (8 short Preludes on Gregorian Tunes), And there's the slow-moving solemn Ave Maris Stella ll ("Jesus tender Mother, make thy supplication") in his 15 Pieces (Vepres du Commun). There's an arrangement of the first movement of the Pergolesi Stabat Mater in OUP's Lent and Easter Organ Music for Manuals
Vox Humana
There's a very fine Salve regina by John Bull, although, strictly speaking, it's an alternatim setting requiring plainsong interpolations.
