stewartt
Our Swell tremulant stopped working at Westbourne recently (Tickell 2001). The tuner and I said 'we'll get it out, take it to bits, figure out how it works and fix it'. Well we got it out and took it apart but, after much head scratching, couldn't work out how it worked. Our tuner rang round a couple of his organ builder mates but nobody seems to know how a Laukhuff tremulant works. This tremulant is now made by Otto Heuss and appears to be identical: www.ottoheuss.de/en/organ-parts/magnets-circuit-boards/tremulants/604/pressure-tremulant. There is nothing to say what wind pressure it needs. The brown flat items are little leather purses. The output of this bizarre contraption goes to a large leather motor which jiggles the schwimmer pan and gives a subtle tremulant effect. Anyway, we poked it about and lubricated the moving parts (all of which were completely free moving) and put it back in the job where - hey presto - it works again. But we don't know why, which is always a very unsatisfactory outcome. Does anyone have any experience with these things?
