David Coram
Someone on orgue-l just posted this, which is so good I'm going to post it here: http://rollingball.com/images/HT.pdf It is the result of many years of research by many different people and gives an excellent account of several important things - one, that equal temperament as we know it was not possible to achieve before 1911 (which was the first time anyone built "test intervals" into the tuning instructions), many important and good modern temperaments (1975-2002), and a smattering of Victorian and 19th century tuning instructions.
