Norwich Vacancy

I see that Norwich are advertising for a DoM (Church Times today).

It seems that the Cathedral Organist is going to be just the cathedral organist.

Anyone have any more information as to what is happening and why?

I seem to remember someone elsewhere writing about an un named cathedral soon to be reorganizing to have a DOM, choir director, organist or something similar - maybe it is here. Lincoln did something like this not so long ago - by all accounts it worked quite there.

This is happening as the assistant (Julian Thomas) is leaving for family reasons.

The present cathedral organist (David Dunnett) has decided that he 'misses playing' and so wants to have a playing post... hence the appointment of a DOM to oversee the Cathedral Boys Choir

This leaves three paid people on the music staff, DD, the new DOM and the Organ Scholar, who will be in his third year in September.

I'm not sure if that has answered your question as there is more to do it that i don't think should be totally public. If you have any 'more direct' questions though please feel free

Hi

I'm not too surprised. I knew David Dunnett when he was a teenager - and he kindly allowed me to try the organ at Norwich a few years ago - and one of his comments then was that he preffered playing to conducting, and tried to do as much playing as he could.

It seems eminently sensible to have specialist for the two roles of playing and conducting.

Every Blessing

Tony

It would seem that maybe our cathedrals are starting to go down the route commonly found in France, where the titulaire organist and Choir master are essentially regarded as equals (am I right about this?). It makes sense, as there only a small number of disgustingly talented musicians around who are both superb organists and choir masters. As for the rest, being mere mortals, they tend to be either good at one or the other.
