  1. Oh - what a shame. This is the reply I received from the Chapel Administrator:

The assistant organist tells me that a couple of big recitals are planned: I'll make sure they are posted on the website and by poster!

I'm sure there would be interest in recitals on this instrument.

  2. You could try a PM to 'Justadad' - I believe that his son is now Organ Scholar there.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have since been in touch with New College and the very helpful Chapel Administrator tells me that the Assistant Organist is planning a couple of "big recitals" very soon, so I will keep an eye open and let you know. It should also be advertised on one of the NC websites.

  3. I recently read Stephen Fry's autobiography, Moab is my Washpot. In this, he describes how he discovered how to change all the piston settings on the 3-manual organ in the school chapel. He gives a wonderful description of how the master playing for Sunday chapel service struggles with all sorts of unexpected noises and reactions as well as a view in the organist's mirror of the master desperatley trying to reset the settings during the sermon! I recommend reading this book, if only for this wonderful tale.

  4. Agree totally about the Tomkins - it's a wonderful piece and this performance is magical. Nicholson's O pray for the peace is also a gem. I think the LP may have been on the Argo label originally, but my version is the horribly cheap Saga reissue. Sadly the OxRecs CD is now out of print and there are no plans to reprint it. I know, coz I tried to get a copy earlier this year. :(

I managed to obtain a copy of this excellent recording yesterday, direct from Magdalen College. If you look at the Magdalen College website there are ordering instructions. It looks like it's also possible to collect in person at the lodge.

Needless to say, I'm enjoying listing to it - superb.
