  1. Hi

This discussion of Harmoniums (which are excellent and very expressive instruments - and despite Colin's comment above, it IS possible to get a reasonable amount of expression out of an American (suction) organ in the hands of a skilled player by manipulating the pedals) reminded me of a video I came across the other days of a combined pipe organ & HArmonium.  An interesting concept.

The builder's web site is here - https://orgelbau-lenter.de/besonderheiten.php.  If you browse the site you'll find a larger example of such an hybrid instrument that also has a pedalboard.

The hybrid pipe/reed organ has appeared at odd times over the years - long before the current interest in pipe/digital hybrids (which themselves have been around for 60 or more years!).  As always, I guess the main issue is keeping pipes & reeds in tune with each other.

  2. Hi

I don't have any real preference for specific keys, but I did find working on pieces in 6 flats & 6 sharps in the same practice sessions somewhat "interesting", especially as I only had a couple of days to get the 6 flat Rutter accompaniment up to concert standard (deputising for the regular accompanist who was ill)

  3. I can recommend her latest CD of Canadian Organ Music which she launched at the cathedral recently with a short recital - a very pleasant prelude to the Organists' Assoc. AGM!  The CD is "Canadian Organ Music" by Rachel Mahon.  It's on the Delphian label DCD34234 and is played on the Coventry Cathedral Harrison.

  4. Hi

NPOR confirms that, apart from the front pipes of the former Nave division, the organ was removed before 2013.  The remaining pipe display sadly hides a speaker array for the electronic.  (Don't get me started on that issue!)

  5. Hi Paul

I picked up the Thistlethwaite book from our local bookshop yesterday - looking forward to reading it.  It cost more than I'd usually spend on a book - but I had a couple of Christmas/Birthday gifts that covered a lot of the cost.  I've had the Brindley book for a while - an interesting read.

I've not come across the Wilkinson book.  COuld you let me know where you got it from, and the full title, publisher etc.  (I use our local bookshop when I can)

    Many thanks

However, I think it was probably the "Augmentum" organ that went down that path, though I may be wrong.

Possibly Colin, it's quite a while since I read the article.  It shows Compton moving with the times - but arguably they went too far in concentrating on electronic organs when they did.

  7. My copy of the book arrived yesterday.

With reference to Compton & the neo-Baroque revival, I've read - probably in an article in "The Organ" - that the last version of the Miniatura was conceived with a more Baroque specification.

  8. At least I managed to order from eBay before you ran out!

I sympathise, having recorded for sale at various Christian Conferences.  It can be frustrating when demand exceeds your expectations - and I did my own duplication (originally cassette, and then CD-R - still have the duplicating machine for the latter).  Distribution of such things is always the difficult bit.

  9. Hi

I've also been using a Zoom H1 for a few years.  As Colin says, very good value for money.  I also use a Sony HDR-MV1 which is basically a digital audio recorder with a (very) basic HD video camera included.  Audio quality is OK.  Very convenient for ad hoc location recording.

  10. Hi

Glad to hear that the book is now available - but a search on e-bay UK failed to find it!

Is it possible to buy direct from you (I have reservations about e-Bay) and what's the price?

  11. Hi

Talking of extension practice organs, the Grant, Deagans & Bradbeer instrument in the song room at Southwell Cathedral (formerly a house organ) is interesting.  There is no adjacent octave extensions on either manual.  See NPOR E01317

  12. Hi

I bought the Stanley facsimiles many years ago, and have no great problem playing from them.  No great favourites amongst them.  I've not come across the T to W edition of them, but I do have a couple of other volumes from that series that get an occasional outing.

I've recently purchased some of Fitzjohn Music's editions of early English organ music.  I worked through a volume of John Marsh voluntaries before Christmas, and will be looking at various other composer's works this year.  Very pleased to have re-discovered this publisher.
