  1. I admire the work that Stephen does to make available the listings. And the recital that Simon Lindley is giving at Durham Cathedral in October 2009 ( which my father organises for his Masonic fundraiser, 200 people attended there last year) is advertised on OR.com

  2. I have downloaded a video played by a Polish friend of mine, playing this on a huge organ at his church, Oliwa Cathedral, Gdansk, just the other day

  3. I always look at organ recital.com, to see whats on, its just there have been recitals?concerts, call them what you will, given here over a period of time, that may not have been advertised at the above .com

    Peter

  4. There is adequate coverage of forthcoming concerts provided by Steve Dunk and under www.organrecitals.com courtesy of Stephen Smith, featuring all different organ builders, so this should avoid too many individual postings hopefully.

    Colin Richell.

I agree Paul, Organ recital.com does not give all the recitals there are, unless someone has put them there in the first place, and like many forum members, this "board" is my next port of call after checking my e-mail. So as they say, "you read it here first"

  5. The tour for Nathan was an exercise in picking up the pieces left by Cameron not coming - so that determined the venues and dates. I'm sure Nathan would love to return to Durham (my favourite Cathedral organ) and give a concert.

    Paul

    so its your favourite too,

had many happy times recording there, and attending recitals in my youth

  6. CHRISTCHURCH PRIORY was one of the venues to have been visited by Cameron Carpenter this summer.

We were initially disappointed at Mr Carpenter's extraordinary decision to cancel his UK tour; but his name is but a memory now that we have booked NATHAN LAUBE instead.

I have visited Nathan's website and listened to many of his tracks, and can confirm that his playing is simply amazing. He is considerably younger than Cameron Carpenter, yet his playing has great maturity, excitement and colour. I have spoken to him several times now, and find that he has a most engaging personality too. His is certainly a name to watch.

We, at Christchurch are very excited at the prospect of his concert on WEDNESDAY AUGUST 26th at 7.30. (There will be a video screen projection.) If anyone is within reach of the area, I do hope they will support this event. Tickets may be booked via Christchurch Tourist Information Centre, or at the door on the night.

    Geoffrey Morgan (Priory Organist)

I can see why you have booked him, he is really good, and the tracks on his web site are amazing. I am just sorry that he is not playing in the north of the country. It says he was in Durham cathedral for a while, and am amazed that JBL did not book him to play this year, mores the pity.

I shall just have to have a couple of days off, and fly south

  7. thank you, the "non organ" stuff will keep the other half happy, whilst I go and take the pictures and buy the CD's, I am sure she will find many clothes shops to browse around

  8. As some forum members are going to visit "exotic" places for the 1st time, and wanting to know what there is to see, I thought I had better ask too.

My partner has just bought a cheap deal to Lloret De Mar, and as my geography is not too good, I heard that Barcelona is just "down" the road. I have never been there before, so if anyone has any ideas, please bring them on

  9. :(

    thank you all,

it seems like it will be a ride through to see how it has stood the test of time.

Speaking today with a young chap who plays there on a regular basis and is giving the recital prior to him going to the Birmingham conservatoire, its still in full working order, and he said it plays most styles of repertoire, within reason.

I gather the 1988 Peter Collins in St. Oswalds in Durham city has kept in good shape, although I have not heard it for a few years now. My father used to have the odd lesson there, from the DoM, David Higgins, who has now sadly passed.

    Peter

ps. St Oswalds are looking for a new DoM

  10. good evening, thats (if the weather holds up).

I have just had an invite thru FB, to a recital at Worksop Priory, has anyone heard it, and if so, what is it like in the "flesh" so to speak?

  11. I might be biased, but I still think the Durham cathedral H&H, has one of the most beautiful sounding 32' double open woods around, it certainly makes the air "shimer" , but that could also be the acoustic. We all have our favourites tho.

    peter

  12. Also, All Saints Hertford - a Father Willis and now with a contra posaune (3 manuals).

Interesting replies so far - I included Derby in the No list as I didnt think it was a true 32'

There is also a nice soft 32' on Croydon St Michael and All Angels (sordun I think) - tho I dont think that is recent.

Speaking of strange names, Milton Abbey (2m) has a 32' called Contra Reim, Sherborne Abbey's is a Contra Batten and we all know about the Serpent at Blackburn!

On another post, someone was mentioning the loudness of the 32' at St David's - I took my choir to Ripon last summer, and the 32 reed there is just awful in the Choir (even worse if you catch it when processing out at the end of the service!).

    Richard

I sat in the quire/choir for a recital, and the vibrating sounds coming from windows?? was as bad as manchesters, which is hidden, or was, behind a curtain in the side chapel

    Peter

  13. and what about that beautiful instrument that is Beverley Minster?. Saw and heard the new D o M, Robert Poyser on Easter monday and D'Arcy Trinkwon on sat last, Now that is an under recorded organ, save for the few recordings that Alan Spedding made there during his long and illustrious tenure

    Ripon Cathedral too

  14. I was given a CD recently (Micheae Murray at St John NY) which includes the "little" E minor P+F; the notes said that this is kniown as the "Cathedral" prelude and fugue and goes on to state that this is an appropriate sobriquet. Well it's the first I've heard of it and, frankly, can't see why this piece rather than any other should evoke a cathedralic atmosphere. Any thoughts?

    Peter

And a super Cd it is, have you heard any of Mr. Murrays others?.

must be an Americanism to give the pieces names

    Peter

  15. Absolutely: he's playing at St. Michael's, Tenbury on Sunday at 3pm-ish and (and now here's a warning that we'll almost certainly hear from at least one other 'member' of this list following the mention of this) at Ally Pally later in June. He appears to be in rude health, as ever.

    DW

I suppose he will be doing his annual minster recital up here in york too, hope for us all then. And I know he is sorting out a new CD, with his local recording engineer

  16. Whilst having a day out last week in Liverpool, just happened to "pop" into the cathedral, (as you do), and came across

    this

they seem to be getting good reviews

    Peter

  17. We were all told that this was one in a series of problems caused recently by a faulty humidifier.

Specifically, it was a single note cypher on the Swell; muck on the pallet or accumulated grot on the pulldown wire would be my best bets.

Yes, it was an excellent recital, the best two items IMHO came after the recital had resumed - viz complete Widor 6 and an improvisation con bravura! Robert took as his theme Thine be the Glory, celebrating Handel Week and Easter simultaneously.

    Thank you,

and as you so rightly mention, the impro was really good, a real highlight to the evening, as was the Widor

    Peter

  18. From the Beverley Minster web-site . . .

    DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

We are delighted to announce that a new Director of Music has been appointed at Beverley Minster.

Robert Poyser is currently the Director of Music at St Mary's Church, Portsea. As a student at the University of Hull, Robert was an organ scholar here at the Minster, before moving on to York Minster as Organ Scholar and then Chelmsford Cathedral where he was Assistant Director of Music.

Robert is a very talented musician, and will continue the long established heritage of striving for musical excellence in the worship of God here at Beverley Minster.

Robert began his post on the 15th March.

And he gave a fine recital for the opening of the Minster recital series on Easter monday, just a shame there was a problem with the organ half way through, but it was sorted.

(maybe Cynic knows exactly what it was causing the "problem")
