  1. Concerning an interesting UTube organ video....

     

    I thought the Ab Weegenaar Psalm 22 very interesting - after a long struggle I located here what I hope is the the score, Message Boarders might be interested.

    I seem to be having one problem after another these days: car, computer virus, credit card fraud, drain.... :mellow: I was looking forward to my copy of the Ab Weegenaar Psalm 22 arriving, I thought it would not be difficult to learn....

     

    I had ordered it from the site tracked down as mentioned above, with the funny Dutch name "Klavarscribo"- I thought just the right sort of name for a music publisher!

     

    It came really quickly! Then I opened it - what a nasty shock! :o:o It looked like it was in a hieroglyphic Chinese code - more than a job for Bletchley Park!

     

    I found out that Klavarskribo is an "easy to learn new notation" - I now know what the funny keyboard logo on the Klavarscribo site meant!

     

    Really, life is too short for all this :( (I hope my post has not made anyone else make the same mistake!!)...

     

    Anyone know how to quickly transcribe it?

  2. I've just been on a small voyage of discovery around the stunning Hinsz organ of Kampen, courtesy of YouTube. Ab Weengenaar's playing is very fine - detailed, musical, poised and sensitive to both music and instrument alike. His playing is interesting to observe to in the light of recent discussions on this subject elsewhere on the board.

     

    - This is what Vox Humanas are really about! Nice 16' Dulzian/Fagot in the opening too.

  3. I'm sure that Message Boarders will be really pleased to know that there is, and what is now becoming, a rare opportunity to hear the Collins Organ at Turner Sims. On Tuesday 28th April Thomas Trotter will be playing all the Bach Trio Sonatas. What a fantastic combination of music, player and organ! Not many organs will cope with one sonata, let alone the whole lot! Hear for yourselves...

  4. ....Last time I personally paid for practice it was 50p per hour, and that felt steep. Varous figures have been mentioned by various people, and I've been asked to recommend a figure - but could do with some feeling for "wot others is charging'"!

     

    50p expensive!? You can't get anything for 50p these days!!

     

    Do you think that the church should subsidise practice?

     

    In 1960 I paid 2/6 per hour for a large 3 manual in the centre of London, this was a fairly normal charge - adjusted by the RPI that comes to £2/hour in 2009.

Sunday morning radio is full of dreadful shocks - I turned on to Radio Three this morning only to hear an unspeakably crude arrangement of a Bach organ fugue by Elgar - I don't know why the BBC thinks orchestral transcriptions of organ music are better to listen to than the real thing - there seems to be some strange preconceptions of listners mental capacity......

  8. My pleasure and thank you for your comments! I'm pleased that Darke's playing still finds appreciation today. I wish I had the missing LP which would complete the collection - a Bach LP on Pilgrim JLP 139. There he plays the Fantasia and Fugue in G Minor, Prelude and Fugue in G BWV 541, Prelude and Fugue B Minor, the Gigue Fugue and some Chorale Preludes.

     

    Might be worth searching in here - but I don't know what you have to do if you find they have it!

     

    PS I had some organ lessons with Frederick Carter in Vancouver. He was extremely proud to say that he had had lessons with Darke, whom he thought to be the leading British organist of the time. Sadly I do not remember that anything was passed on to me, except a few casual suggestions as to where I could solo returns of Bach fugue subjects, which I have now forgotten.......

  9. I would be interested to get an idea of how much "minor" tuning adjustments are typically possible with cone tuning, before the metal at the top of the pipe will start to crack. And also whether there is much difference in durability of high tin content compared to low tin content pipes. Are pipes with high tin content also more likely to suffer bending because of the need for more aggresive hammering of the cones - or is this balanced by their increased stiffness?

     

    hmmmm.... I don't recall seeing any sable brush treatment when my organ has been tuned...hmmmmm...

  10. Sounds pretty good on the Bath Abbey organ post-Klais too! (I played it once whilst I was there, and heard the Norwich Cathedral Organ Scholar play it very well during a lunchtime prom.) Pedalboard has top Gs which came into their own...

     

    St Sulpice pedal board only goes to F - was this written for Dupre's American tours?

  11. ....Hmmm. I just thought I would listen to the Advent Carols from Johns on Listen Again- only to find that, for some reason, it is not available on Listen Again.......!!??.....

     

    I don't know what the BBC scheme is - but you can't rely on anything.....

  12. I've heard them now too to-night - the Royal Trumpets - Thomas Trotter explained that he would use them in Messiaen's Les Corps Glorieux - no prizes for guessing where. But from my seat under the Dome they were not as loud or as directional as I imagined they would be. In fact, like the whole recital, they were another artistic touch, not a blast or dreadful opaque honking.

  13. For the record, does anyone have any knowledge of the 2ft. Clairon Doublette on the G.O. at S. Sernin, Toulouse, please? I would be interested to know what this rank does (and of what type of pipes it consists) above C37 (or even C25).

     

    There is also a Clairon Doublette on the Grand-Choeur at St Sulpice and similar information would be interesting.

  14. It worked perfectly for me. I was rather impressed. Of course, I did realise after posting it that they would know who had sent it. Hope I haven't blotted my copy book before attending my first Advisory Council meeting!

     

    well i think you were lucky - having worked with computers since 1966 - i do not have the time or patience to mess about with sites put together without a sensible user perspective...

    Nothing is worse than internet sites that, unlike this discussion board, are badly put together..

  16. Just one regret, in that M.Latry didn't make us all jump with a blast from the West Gallery at the start of his improvisation - the theme from the Agincourt Song would have sounded well on the Royal Trumpets, methinks.

     

    I agree. Before the concert I mused on what an excellent opportunity an improvisation would be to demonstrate the Royal Trumpets. As it turned out - perhaps they could have helped shape an improvisation which, while being technically masterful, had a structure which I have to say I could not follow..
