  1. I emailed Cousans and asked them if they had the specification of this instrument, unfortunately they did not have one but told me that it's unlikely they will be going there again as the tunings have been cancelled. If anyone has details of this instrument I would be interested to see them.

  2. I quite agree with Quentins comments about the firm which carried about a Bad rebuild on the organ in his church, they did the same at St Michaels Tividale totally ruining a perfectly good Peter Conacher instrument.

Have you come across St Lukes Cradley Heath?

Its a large 3 manual extension organ, but sadly most of it doesnt work. Jack Ivey who worked for Comptons told me the history of this organ.

Comptons were building a new organ for the church which was destroyed when their factory was bombed, they did however manage to provide a Cinema organ duly voiced to fit the church. It was too large for the bulding but made a lovely sound in either guise!!!

I wish Jack was still alive to help you more, his knowledge was immense.

    Best wishes

  4. I have 2 instances recently where I have received no fee for a wedding and funeral even though my contract states that I should have, I even quoted the relevent pages from Barry Williams book to the incumbent. The whole area is a nightmare and wish in some way matters were clearer, his argument over the funeral was the family had not entered into a contract with me to play but had engaged the services of another organist who the family wanted. I am rather aggireved over the whole matter.

  5. They did some work on Yardley Parish Church in Birmingham, it was a rebuild of an Aeolian, the work was done in 1955, all I can say a most peculiar organ. It has now been replaced.

  6. Does anyone have a copy of the J W Walker extension organs brochure/booklet that they don't want, or are willing to sell? In the same breath, does anyone have any Walker curved droplets that they might be persuaded to sell?

    Hector

Theres a firm in Stratford on Avon who may have some Walker droplets available, its worth a try.

  7. Hi

Look at Clive Shropshire, this organ is superb for what it is and was indentical to the Willis on wheels in St Pauls before the rebuild by our hosts.

I suspect NPOR are wrong with the organ in Montgomery as the Harmonic Flute would be 4 and not 8 as stated.

  8. I have been asked to give a recital in a methodist church and find myself wanting to find some music to play that might have had its roots in the methodist church. You know, you think of people like Brewer, Howells, Jackson, Bairstow, who were all involved in cathedrals, but what organ composers were based in methodist churches? I can think of Lloyd-Webber (senior) at the Westminster Central Hall, but does anyone else have any ideas by any chance?

I wouldn't worry about that, just make the recital enjoyable. If you are worried about the content message Paul Carr a member on here who had a long standing connection with the methodists, I am sure he will guide you.

  9. BBC News has shown pictures of the Cathedral and also footage of parts of the spire collapsing after the main shock, the damage to the City looks terrible, can we hold in prayer the souls of the people who lost their lives, their families and all the people who have been affected by this terrible disaster. I know they are fearing after shocks.

I hope and pray that members of this forum who live in Christchurch, are safe.

  10. I played that Bevington when it was still at Holmer, and it was a splendid sight on the west end gallery! The purpose of my visit was to rectify some voicing issues on its digital successor. I'm glad to see it has found a new home!

There will be an article about this instrument and its removal to Hay on Wye in a future issue of O.R.

  11. Thanks David - just picked up your email - will read it when I've ploughed through the others, have been away from the computer for a week!

    P.

    See you soon

  12. Thank you, everyone, that's very helpful. As I feared it looks very much as if the Mayhew volumes would be a false ecomony. There seem to be a few secondhand copies of "Music for a Bride" around, but I see it's another Mayhew book and it sounds as if it has perfect binding with the usual problems that that entails.

The Oxford books looks as if it has most things, though I'm surprised it omits Handel's Largo and Bach's "Sheep may safely graze"; perhaps the younger generations no longer know these.

Also, considering what sparked this whole issue, it would be useful to have Schubert's "Ave Maria". The other day, a bride specifically asked the priest for "Ave Maria", but, when asked which one, could only say, "Oh, I don't know. The usual one!" The Gounod is easly arranged (fortunately I have a nice 2' pedal flute for the melody), but the Schubert is less adaptable and I have better ways to spend my time.

From that point of view, it looks as though the Cramer volumes might be the ones to go for - thanks, AJT. I can't find a list of contents online, but the synopsis of Volume I looks promising. Any chance you could give a few more details, please? Does Volume II contain any music that couples might request?

The Cramer is far better Ive been using mine since 1992 and apart from worn page turns the binding is still good.

  13. I'm currently looking into settings for Common Worship Communion.

(Those of you who know where I'm DoM, please don't be alarmed - BCP isn't going anywhere!)

Does anyone have experience of Richard Shephard's Addington Service, reference to that seems to pop up all over the place. A scan of a couple of pages to look at would be even better...

And, what else is out there?

I'm particularly thinking of 'congregation friendly' which at the same time gives the choir something interesting to do.

    Over to you!

    P.

Paul theres a copy at Wordsley, look in the organ on the right. Let me know if you can't find it.

  14. I hope when the organ is restored in Hull Parish Church that the Compton lighted stops will remain, the only other instrument I can recall with these is Downside Abbey.
