  1. That's all I'm expecting - a build-up "on paper". Going round playing different organs, I am always fascinated to see the range of ideas people have. Obviously, it depends on the instrument! In this case, everything "works". The flutes are nicely contrasted; the strings lovely; the mixtures complimentary, and "build" when coupled; the reeds are all good "blenders". So, what would YOU do? (PS by PM!)

Oh, ok then! :) I'll just imagine I turned up at the last minute to play for something and found the pistons all blank and had to set up something in a hurry.

Sw 1: Echo Gamba, Voix Celeste

    Sw 2: Flutes 8 & 4

    Sw 3: Diapasons 8 & 4

Sw 4: Diapasons chorus to Mixture

Sw 5: As 4 plus Cornopean

    Sw 6: Full Swell

    Gt 1: Stopt Diapason

    Gt 2: Open Diapason

    Gt 3: Diapasons 8 & 4

    Gt 4: Diapasons 8, 4, 2

Gt 5: Diapasons 8, 4, 2 plus Mixture and Double

Gt 6: As 5 plus Trumpet

As I tend to use "Gt and Pedal pistons combined" I would set the Pedal pistons to match the Great pistons. I would probably not put a crescendo on the General pistons, but reserve those for different "effects".

  2. Further to my "poser" in the "General Crescendo Pedal" topic, I would be very interested to know how people would set their own piston memory channel(s) on the same instrument, the spec of which I copy below

That looks like a very useful specification, EG. :) But I just don't know how anybody could give a worthwhile answer to that (apart from just giving a chorus build up "on paper") without actually hearing the instrument.

  3. The Thomas Trotter arrangement of Sleigh Ride is really fun, not difficult (as even I can manage it!) and is published by Banks, York YO41 1LB. I bought a copy last year, but sadly cannot play it in my church after Mass as it would not be considered suitable in a Catholic Church as it is purely secular. Never mind, it's very entertaining and enjoyable to play. Robert.

Oh, I dunno! It is quite tricky to bring off properly IMHO.

  4. My ears must work differently. For years people have said 'thick and muddy' when I just hear warm and rich.

Hear, hear! Both open doubles and stopped doubles have their uses and - well voiced, and used with discretion - add gravitas without a cloying effect.

  5. If this is the case, then I must disagree with you. The version in AMNS (395) to my ears has a better flow and overall shape.

Agreed, although I'm not entirely convinced by the harmonisation.

Having had to study the war poems of Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke killed any interest I may once have had in poetry.

I found at school that the poetry of Wilfred Owen was so intensely poignant that it actually helped kindle my love of poetry.

  6. I'm not that sure there are many people online between midnight and 2.00 a.m. when the problem usually occurs. Most of the time it is instantaneous. We're on 8 Meg and its a business server, so there are not a lot of people using it at that time I suspect!

    Jonathan

You'd be surprised, Jonathan! That's actually about the worst time of day. It would probably pay to check your modem settings and see just what the signal to noise ratio is when you have problems. Or just unplug your modem from the 'phone line for a few seconds, and see what happens when you resync.

  7. There is a well known tale - possibly mythical - of either Norman Cocker or J Varley Roberts giving a severe reprimand to a lady who was joining in the psalms when she shouldn't have been. No doubt it has also been attributed to others.

I have it on good authority from a friend who used to sing as a boy treble at Manchester during Cocker's time there that it was he.

  8. I understand that, at the top end where flues are often used, there may be two or three flue pipes for each note. I should be interested to know whether these are tuned in unison or, perhaps, in thirds in order to sound more 'reedy'.

Generally flue pipes are used at the top end. I've never come across them tuned in thirds, though, and normally it's just one pipe per note.

  9. Sorry, but I don't think you have quite followed what I'm saying! I also had the problem this morning - but only with the Mander Board. Pierre's French language "Organographia", also an Invision Power Board, behaves promptly at all times, as do all other websites. Re-setting my router and changing my IP address will do nothing to increase my connection speed. Indeed it will do the opposite as BT's system optimises the speed of the connection over a period of 72 hours after any interruption. This is most definitely a fault condition. Nevertheless, I'm grateful for you taking the trouble to offer advice.

    JC

Sorry, John. I wasn't replying to you, actually!

Yes, I've noticed the same problem with this board becoming painfully slow at times recently. I think it must be a problem with the board's server. Indeed, another discussion forum run by the same company crashes every morning between 0104 and 0140!

  10. Every night this week I have had a period of ten to fifteen minutes when almost all websites have been slow loading, and those with any sort of graphics unable to load at all. I put it down to maintenance on the ISP server.

It could be because your signal to noise ratio has dropped as it does at night with so many people online. Unplugging your modem from the 'phone socket for a few seconds and then plugging it in again should allow it to resync and sort out the problem.

  11. How many others have finance problems with their respective churches?

I may have mentioned this before. Apologies if I have bored anybody with this previously.

When I took on one of my present jobs, I gave weekly lunchtime organ recitals at the church, carrying on a tradition I had maintained in a certain city church, and which was good for my practising!

The agreement was that we would establish an organ fund (the organ was rebuilt a few months after I took on the post) for future maintenance and repairs. I raised quite a lot of money for it with the organ recitals. Imagine my dismay to discover - several years ago - that there was very little money left in the organ fund as, with a change of Treasurer, it had been decided to pay my "salary" out of the organ fund.

So, several years of giving organ recitals to raise money for the church had merely meant that the church had me for free for several years. Without knowing it, I was raising the money to pay my salary.
