oliviervernet Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Does someone know Samuel Wesley's organ concertos ? Is the music available ? Does it exist a recording ? Thanks.
MusingMuso Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Does someone know Samuel Wesley's organ concertos ? Is the music available ? Does it exist a recording ?Thanks. =========================== I once heard this performed at the RCM Manchester, using the college organ with orchestra. I can't recall who played it, but it was rather jolly. I may have a copy of the music coming to think of it, and it "may" have been an OUP edition I obtained. I'll have a dig around and see what I can come up with. MM
Vox Humana Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Philip Olleson's book on Samuel Wesley lists five organ concertos, but only two exist in a complete state - one in D major and the other in C major. The manuscripts of all five are in the British Library in London. I am afraid I have never heard them and I do not know whether there is a published edition.
andyorgan Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 There are some Wesley movements in that English Organ Music series, the Concerto volume, though I think they are by John or Charles, not S or SS.

MM =========================== I'm sorry, but I got it wrong. I checked my music, and it is the Stanley Concerto which I have, and which I think was bought after hearing it at Manchester some 44 years ago! MM
Jephtha Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 An edition of the D major concerto of Samuel Wesley has been prepared for publication in a forthcoming volume of Musica Britannica (together with various other organ concertos of the period).
