Guest
I'm looking for recordings of pre-18th century organ music by the likes of Gibbons, Tomkins et al. I know of only one disc, namely Tudor Organ Music by Carl Smith on Naxos. Such music does sometimes appear on choral recordings to fill in the gaps etc, but I'm looking for dedicated albums. I can't believe there's only one, but perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places. Does anyone have any recommendations?
sjf1967
With apologies - this might be of interest? https://www.resonusclassics.com/products/the-virtuoso-organist-tudor-and-jacobean-masterworks-stephen-farr : a disc of Byrd on the same label and instrument is released on October 13. Not a recommendation, more a point of information.....
AndrewG
There’s a disc by Magnus Williamson who specialises in music from that era (available on Spotify).

Not a recommendation, more a point of information..... That's a really superb disc, and likely to be a firm favourite in anyone's collection soon after they've bought it. It was for me anyway. I'm very eager to hear that Byrd now. On the subject of Byrd, there's also this capacious box set from Davitt Moroney on Hyperion, now download only, which contains his organ music: https://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/dc.asp?dc=D_CDS44461/7 Chandos produced an old favourite CD of mine of Blow, Gibbons, Clarke, Croft, Locke and Purcell, recorded on the Dallam organ of Guimiliau back in the early 1990s. (Edit: not a chamber organ though!) It's download only now: https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/8035082--organ-music-robert-woolley Edited September 20, 2023 by peterdoughty I forgot it was chamber organs only! I'm really glad you liked it so much - it was a very enjoyable project and the T and B is a wonderful thing. Not really a chamber organ, but there's also a disc of Kenneth Gilbert doing 17th C English on the Dallam; I may still have a copy. I hope so, because it's going for about $250 secondhand on EBay... Nic DAVIDSON PORTER
If it's helpful, there's a lovely complete Tallis keyboard CD by Rachelle Taylor on ATMA Baroque, ACD2 2349. Played on the G&G Wetheringsett and Wingfield organs whilst in situ at King's Chapel, Univ. of Aberdeen.
