    The Ugly!

Hi A picture and stop list, etc. would be appreciated by NPOR as well - we are trying to fill in the gaps! Every Blessing Tony
  2. Hi In contrast, I found Girton quite compfortable - no problem at all (except remembering that the Grande Orgue is on the bottom manual!) Every Blessing Tony
  3. Hi That's not a bad idea anyway - and the same applies in hospitals. The signal generated by a mobile as it logs on to the network every few minutes can interfere with electronic systems - and most church sound systems don't use components of the highest quality anyway! The symptons are usually a series of "clicks" every few minutes. Every Blessing Tony
  4. Hi There are some listed on NPOR - just put "Isle of Man" in the address search - around 70 are listed - I don't know how many are still in situ. Every Blessing Tony
  5. Hi That sounds about right in the light of various comments made to me whilst I was finding information for the NPOR update! Every Blessing Tony
  6. Hi The Windlsham organ has had even more extensions - real pipes this time, see http://npor.emma.cam.ac.uk/cgi-bin/Rsearch...ec_index=E01090 A very strange beast indeed (and I gather a somewhat eccentric owner - to say the least). Every Blessing Tony
  7. Hi HNB won't be doing anything today,as they ceased trading a few years ago! Every Blessing Tony
  8. Hi I have no great problems with How Great Thou Art - I certainly don't regard it as heritical Take a look at John 7 - verses 16, 28 & 33 speak about God sending Jesus, as does John 8:42. John 17:3f puts it even more clearly:- "3 Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began." On the basis of these verses, God sending Jesus is completely Biblical. And if Jesus didn't come to die for our sins, just what was the point of the incarnation? Every Blessing Tony
  9. Hi The organ is aving a complete, ground-up restoration - re-leathering, soundboard reconstructed, pipework overhauled and put back on speech properly, and the Keralopnon that supplanted the original Stopped Diapason Treble - probably in the 1870's - has been cut down, stoppered and revoiced to become a Stopped Diapason - so we'll have a usable Flute stop at last, as well as the key "Diapasons" registration for the Early English repertoire. It's a chamber organ from c.1820 - GG compass keyboard and a C-compass pedalboard (pull downs arranged as a return coupler). More details on NPOR http://npor.emma.cam.ac.uk/cgi-bin/Rsearch...ec_index=E00285 The work has overrun somewhat - but hopefully we should have the organ back at the end of next week or the beginning of the week after. We're hoping to arrange a celebration recital next Spring - I'll post details once we've got something booked. Every Blessing Tony
  10. Hi I'll not be playing any organ music for a couple more weeks, until our organ comes back from Willis' factory! Every Blessing Tony
  11. Hi Because that's what the information we were given says! As the survey says, the info is from Sumner, BIOS Journal No 18, 1994. If anyone has documented information that contradicts this - then let us know. What do the department labels on the console say? (if there are any). Every Blessing Tony NPOR Editor
  12. Hi I had the same issues with the previous Baptist church where I was minister - the congregation said they needed to change - but the reality was that they wanted everything to stay the same, but more people to come in, as long as they were people like them! Here is the total opposite - I have changed things - but only because it's happened naturally, and with the full support of the church and for good reasons - so it's not always a battle. Every Blessing Tony
  13. Hi IIRC the one I heard about was Peasmarsh, just North of Rye - but it was a fair while ago - we moved from that area 13 years ago. Every Blessing Tony
  14. Hi 3 options are currently reasonably available:- 1) Minidisc recorder (a proper home one, not a portable - they are still around - the one I use has a timer facility - I use it every week to record "The Organist Entertains" 2) Software is available to use a compter for timed recording of TV at least - I've not used it, so no further comment. 3) a Hi-fi video recorder - the quality won't be quite as good as the above, but even a cheap machine will do a pretty reasonable job. I suppose you could also use a DVD recorder or one of the hard disc video recording systems, as someone else mentioned. For the best quality, take the signal from Sky TV (if you can) - althoguh I gather that Freeview is a second best - neither of these have the processing that even Radio 3 seems to insisit on adding to the FM feed these days. Hope this helps. Every Blessing Tony
  15. Hi I wouldn't be so confident - finding computer techs who really understand audio issues seems to be somewhat problematical. I know a couple of very good computer-industry professionals - but I know more about computer audio and A/V than either of them. Yes, computers are widely used these days in recording and video facilities - but there are still potential problems - I certainly wouldn't want to rely totally on my laptop for serious live recording for example - I also use another recorder as a back-up. 16. Hi I know of 2 people who are using Hauptwerk commercially. Every Blessing Tony

Hi I assume this is meant to be a joke - if it's not. maybe you can quote your sources. Every Blessing Tony
  18. Hi A remote village church in Sussex lost most of the Great upperwork a few years ago - so it does happen. Maybe Quentin should leave the door to the organ chamber unlocked The organ in Sussex was rather more accessible. Every Blessing Tony

Hi Not totally accurate - the organ was a rebuild of a Nicholson (presumably of Bradford rather than the Worcester firm) by H&H, and in its final form in the church was a 4 manual - the info is all there on NPOR. Shipley Baptist Church still exists, but now using their former Sunday School Hall - the land that the church building was on is currently a car park. Every Blessing Tony
  20. Hi Saffron Walden parish church has the console on the rood screen accessed by a spiral stone staircase. Also, ISTR Norwich cathedral is similar - but it was a long time ago, and only one visit, so I can be sure. Certainly, some organ loft access routes leave a lot to be desired on the health & safety front - I used to play at Christchurch, Summerfiled in Birmingham - not a stone staicase, but the story is the architect forgot to put any access in, so to get there you open what looks like on of the cupboard doors in the vestry and ascend a steep (literally 45 degree) wooden staircase - with the widest part of the treads on the 180 degree turn about 9 inches - no handrail (there's not enough width). No fun at all when the blower failed and I needed to get down into the church to the piano for the closing hymn one Sunday (which had already been announced by the time I realised the blower would not start!). Hi That's because it's in Welsh! Try http://www.churchinwales.org.uk/press/0023e.html - but it is rather dated (2000). I have played the Bangor organ - the first time we were on holiday in the area I contacted the organist, and after evensong he locked the cathedral, left us the keys to get out, and set "stay as long as you like". I found it a pretty good example of its breed - and I think there's enough Hill material left, along with the better Compton stuff, to make a good rebuild well worthwhile. Every Blessing Tony

Hi One of the recent organ mags says that David Wells is rebuilding it, so presumabloy they have got some money. Every Blessing Tony
  23. Hi I would need to be back for Sunday - and preferably not too late on Saturday. The other issue, if you're targetting church organists, is Saturday weddings! Sounds like an interesting idea, but I suspect needs careful planning and research. The other obvious question is could those who have full-time jobs get to your location in reasonable time for a Friday evening event? Every Blessing Tony

Hi They are indeed way out on it being the most recent - Chemsford was put in around 10 years or so ago (and, in my opinion, the Nave organ suffers from being buried in the tower arch - I understand that the builder's had no choice on this) and Matthew Copley is currently building in the RC Cathedral in Edinburgh (see NPOR E01163) - and I guess Worcester may well beat them as well if they're only just starting fund raising. Every Blessing Tony
  25. Hi Perhaps you could send NPOR the details of Glenorchy URC! Every Blessing Tony
