  1. I wonder if they could deliver in time for this evening?! I've just been cellotaping all the afore-mentioned loose pages together, and realize I'm going to need blu-tak to attach the some of the items I'm accompanying her to the piano, because the page turns are well nigh impossible. The only thing I shall need now is telescopic spectacles to see the pages out on the extreme ends of the piano! I know cellotape isn't ideal, but it's all I've got at the moment. So, there's me using photocopies, cellotape and blu-tak when - at the other end of the spectrum - there are those musicians lucky enough to use fancy computer screens! Oh, how the other half live - 'taint fair!!!
  2. I could do with a digital music desk this evening! I'm doing a concert with a soprano this evening. I've just looked at the "scores" she's given me (I have a tendency to leave everything to the last minute!) - and they're mostly loose photocopies, which is my pet hate! I think I'm going to have to get a page turner from the audience, and one who doesn't mind holding loads of sheets in order for when the repeats come up....
  3. Great idea MM! I'd patent it now if I were you!!!
  4. The Souls of the Righteous - Stanley Marchant Fairly straightforward, and gorgeous - especially in a decent acoustic.
  5. I think it actually was when I caught one of my fingers that I decided I'd finally had enough of them!
  6. Yes, indeed. I did, however, remove some from an organ once. They were two additional hooks which were evidently manufactured by an amateur from a coat hanger, or something similar. They were quite sharp (!) and repeatedly tore scores.
  7. I'm sorry to hear that, Patrick. That was far from my intention. I'm pleased to hear that you feel that you are worshipping at funeral services. However, I wonder how many of the mourners actually feel that they are there to worship. I think they are probably there to pay their respects to the deceased.
  8. So, has anything improved about the RCO since this thread started in 2006?
  9. Yes, I agree entirely with that.
  10. It looks a bit incongruous to me! A bit like an antique Grandfather clock in a MFI store...
  11. Hear, hear! However, IMHO, funeral services don't have much to do with worship, but are geared towards helping the mourners move on with their grieving process.
  12. I was about to post a witty reply, but yours is 10 times better, Vox!
  13. Welcome Richard! Hope you have fun here.
  14. I've just been reading the details of your house organ on your website, Paul. For anybody who hasn't visited that site, it's one of the most entertaining I've ever seen and you could happily spend an entire evening (or two!) looking over it.
  15. But don't they have that wonderful wooden hand with which to conduct from the console at Ripon?!! Or is my memory playing tricks?
  16. Ah, so that's why it turns red, and the function of that button! Thank you to everybody who's taken the effort to suggest ways of doing this. Much appreciated.
  17. I just couldn't resist doing this! I think Vox's suggestion absolutely sensible. Now, could some bright computer-literate person please inform me if there's an easy way to quote from two different postings if I want to reply to them both in one of my own postings, please? I've seen it done from time to time, so it must be possible. Thanks!
  18. In my position, I have no written contract - yet! The vicar and the churchwardens are aware that I tune the organ and correct faults from time to time. Whilst our organ loft is actually quite safe, and I know what I'm doing, I have wondered what the position would be if something did happen. Thanks.
  19. Yes, I think that's exactly what I'd do too. Just grin and bear it, and think of the fee.
  20. How does this apply to an organist who may take the occasional trip into the organ loft to tickle the reeds?
  21. Ah, yes, I remember that now! I think you'll need to develop the skills of a contortionist and also acquire x-ray vision. You'll be fine then!
  22. That's terribly sad. On another thread, I mentioned an organ whose Swell box was very dangerous to access. When I spoke to one of the tuners of this instrument (about 12 years or so ago), he said that each time he climbed inside this instrument he thought of an organ tuner who had fallen a long way down onto a soundboard and had died as a result of having pipes penetrate his body. I wondered if this gruesome story was merely anecdotal, and hope it was. Has anybody any knowledge of this happening?
