  1. Always best - we'll get there one day - my only Rouen experiences up to now are going through on the way south by car. AJJ
  2. The Jeremy Filsell Vierne CDs give a good impression. AJJ
  3. If anyone ever turns this into a suitable file or CD I'd be first on the list for a copy - back a bit it came up in discussion on this forum. There were also those 45s of Arthur Wills at Ely (my first Couperin - albeit on a H&H with revoiced reeds only then), Richard LLoyd at Hereford (Bonnet - Pastorale and Mathias - Processional - first Willis sound) etc. The first Hurford Bach set on tape made a great impression on me especially as we could also hear him live at our local cathedral up the road at St Albans. 4. 'Agree with all HG says above - 'had considerably longer than I should have had on the QC Frobenius during an Organists' Association visit a few years ago - it even made my playing sound good. Amazing immediacy of touch etc. We did new College too - 'liked that. Christchurch was a bit odd - not quite what I expected - though Clive Driskill Smith played it well. AJJ
  5. Here's a nice one near us. AJJ
  6. A podcast of the Omaha organ can be downloaded from the Pasi website with the resident organist and choir perfoming. Not all of it downloaded that well but the sounds are amazing. Everything from early to Messaien - on the strength of this I bought the Petr Eben 2 Versetti - it is just about my level as far as Eben is concerned. AJJ PS If anyone has a copy of the Buxheimer Organ Book - more especially the Redeuntes in La and a scanner........a PM would be welcome!
  7. Quite a few do seem to 'do the rounds' so to speak - maybe if any on here have done this they could chip in with their experiences. AJJ
  8. Quite a few places seem to be doing this sort of thing (previous DOMs becoming the main organist) - Lincoln, Norwich, Liverpool - to name but three in the more and less recent past. That along with a choral specialist i/c at St Pauls. is this to be a continuing trend and what has changed (and where) to prompt this seeming realignment of roles? First thoughts seem to indicate that it is a forward move but has it come from clergy wanting things different or resident organist/DOMs feeling like a change and more 'console work'? from a personal point of view (and in a much more lowly situation) as mainly a 'choir type' who also plays the organ I really enjoy my current role which involves playing only with nothing whatsoever to do with recruiting and training singers. My Rector does that - he is mercifully very musical and the choir, though small manages to achieve much. AJJ
  9. Mrs AJJ & small AJJs permitting - I'll be there!! AJJ
  10. The new small 2 manual Mander at St Gile Cripplegate in the City of London is a must for anyone who is sceptical about (some at least) UK organ building. Superbly constructed, marvellous to look at and from a small number of stops a huge pallet of tonal possibilities is available. Look on our host's website for details & pipe scales etc. From another builder (and despite some statements made above) I would also suggest we all watch with anticipation what is being done at Worcester at present. Check out the photos for a start. AJJ
  11. And if you listen to him playing the earlier repertoire on his 'Hook' CDs or his Mendelssohn set it is clear that he is not only at home with the 'Symphonic (or whatever one calls it) repertoire. Likewise - his Elgar Sonata played on tne Hook organ at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Boston is one of the nicest versions I have heard. The organ sounds like an early Hill so all the lines can be heard etc. and there is none of the pulling about of tempi and heavy registration etc. that can spoil this piece. AJJ
  12. What - not another digital!! AJJ
  13. AJJ

    Solihull School

As the starter of this line - thanks for this! AJJ
  14. Daniel Roth is superbly hospitable and without much fuss one can arrange a visit to the console after the 'audition' (short recital) following Mass on a Sunday. We were in Paris last year - I emailed and him and got a very nice reply and spent a happy half an hour or so (along with others) up at the console watching him play. Unforgettable! AJJ
  15. And the rest! (Widor Toccata plus improvisation) AJJ
  16. Mine came yesterday - rather fun - especially if you are into sonic brain blowing - also with some nice shots of the building. The improvisation from the BBC mag. CD is on there too and some bits and pieces at the end that I have not listened to yet. It also loaded nicely onto my iPod to use later - sermons perhaps! (Sorry Revs. Tony, Patrick, Quentin et al!) AJJ
  17. Here's a start with M-CA. AJJ
  18. Who knows! - I find one of the most exciting effects on one of the instruments I play is to add the 2-2/3 & 1-3/5 Sesqui. to the chorus up to IV Mixture - really clangy but perfectly clear for the contrapunctalists amongst us. Unorthodox perhaps but if it sounds ok...... AJJ
  19. Wow - what a discovery - hours of fun! AJJ
  20. Someone has done this fairly recently in France - using the net etc. with 2nd console computer and 'sound' in one place and organ in another! AJJ
  21. I seem to remember an article about this organ by Stephen Bicknell some time back in Choir and Organ. If it is this one then I seem to remember him commenting on the almost one off nature of all the sub tierces etc. and suggesting that in order to play it effectively one has to abandon all preconceived ideas of almost everything!
