  1. Robin Winn is still around in the Bath area - 'suggest you PM David Coram - he might know more. AJJ
  2. Has anyone got a spec. for this instrument please? AJJ
  3. I've ordered the Morançon Noels as a result of getting the Royal Holloway CD - the trouble is that the tunes are now driving my wife and I quite mad - infectious stuff! On the subject of interesting organ music - there is some quite good new repertoire coming out of the USA - OUP especially seem to have a good line. My 'piece of the week' though is an easy but really effective transcription - Larghetto from the Elgar Serenade for Strings in a volume The Reflective Elgar from Animus - pure magic! AJJ
  4. This corresponds to the CD liner. AJJ
  5. I bought this excellent CD the other day - super playing fro Rupert Gough, interesting repertoire and an organ I knew very little about. It seems to fit into a trend with the RFH, St John's Islington, Brompton Oratory etc. Does anyone here know it well and does it actually sound as good (for its time) live as it does on CD? I would have put up the NPOR link but the spec. does not quite correspond to that in the CD liner - when I have time I will send an ammended survey! AJJ
  6. Surprisingly there are still a few places like this today thank goodness! AJJ

I had news about the opening of this - does anyone know about the new instrument - spec. etc.? AJJ
  8. As you say - good to debate and of course point taken! AJJ
  9. 'Bit of a generalisation perhaps Barry - I was once a supernumary at a major establishment and I hope that the above was not the case when I was on duty at weekends or on the numerous occasions during the week when I was asked to sing. Certainly the DOM then always seemed happy with my contribution and with a full time teaching job I was not able to do the full gamut. It was bit 'by the seat of one's pants' on occasions but an incredible experience especially as the musical set up there was in a state of reinvigoration by a super gent. of a DOM who has now gone on to higher places (position that is - not heaven). I hasten to add that I do have a decent music degree with voice as first study albeit taken some years ago now. AJJ
  10. In the 80s (I think) there was an advert in OR for a large 3 man Kenneth Jones organ for Keble - with a rather nice looking case a little in the Christ Church Cathedral Dublin style with a sideways console but nothing seemed to come of this. AJJ
  11. I know of a situation (which for proprierty's sake I will keep vague in its description) where quite a lot of money was available (from a single source) to rebuild a small 3 manual 'parish' organ in a meduim sized church. What they got was a huge console complete with every mod con on the planet - mobile of course - connected to an over inflated collection of pipes from various sources over 3 manuals and pedal complete with all the 'goodies' one could ask for. (Rather the sort of thing that has happened more recently when for instance a smallish parish church has taken delivery of an over large digital). If I go any further folks will try and work out where I am talking about but let's just say that anything the local (ish) cathedral could do this place could then do better - just! The then organist loved it - he had previously been in a church with an instrument with these resources and the church loved it because for a while they attracted recitalists of stature to play in their recital series. It seemed to me, however that too much money had been spent because what they actually got was not really what it appeared to be - maybe they were not advised effectively, maybe they had spent the money on the wrong things but all in all lurking underneath was the same rather mediocre parish machine that they started off with. Maybe the solution should have been to use the money to buy something new and splendid with it's own identity fit for it's space - who knows. They were lucky to have had the money but maybe it went to their heads a little too much - so to speak. AJJ
  12. Little Bardfield can be seen (and heard) here and if you are in the area do try and visit here too. The West Tofts organ is now here at South Pickenham. AJJ
  13. Queens College Oxford (the organ version of a cold shower), St Louis en l'Ise (just amazing), Salisbury Cathedral (pure indulgence) Royal Albert Hall (sheer power) and St Anne Limehouse (forget the flues - the big reeds are stunning) - I have yet to play a Cavaille Coll or a Schoenstein (!) - at present the former is more probable than the latter - at least in the near future. AJJ PS Also Stogursey and Kilkhampton (both Roger Yates reworkings of old material)
  14. I'd love this one as a house organ!! AJJ
  15. Warminster is still there - 'organ inside much rebuilt - recently restored by Griffiths and Cooper, AJJ
  16. Too true - we underestimate the sophistication and taste of some of our musical students at our peril. We should also remember as teachers or choir directors that it is the way we present the music that will ultimately allow it to succeed or not. The youth of today votes with it's feet (so to speak) - if we are enthusiastic then they will be. This may sound vaguely corny but it works - or at least has done pretty much for me for more years than I am going to admit on here and even though at times it leaves me totally kn   d! AJJ
  17. I agree - we do AQA and I include a unit on minimalism. AJJ

    Oops - wrong button! AJJ

    Duets

Get in touch with Maureen McAllister and Robin Jackson at Corsham PC - they not only play masses of duets but have arranged some quite interesting bits and pieces and publish them also. They are in the phonebook under 'Jackson' - you could also find the via the Wilts. and Bath organists Association - I think the WBOA has a website - Robin certainly was/is one of their officers. AJJ
  20. Am I right im my memory that at some point the manual order was changed at S. Sulpice? AJJ
  21. Didn't something similar happen at Ely last rebuild although a Sesquialtera III went in to replace the Cornet V (Clutton/Wills) for a more 19th Century colour within the chorus. AJJ
  22. St Albans Cathedral and The Colston Hall Bristol are a joy to play too. AJJ
  23. Yes - and if one listens to the CD from which this piece originally came one can also hear how successfully the organ copes with Anglican repertoire and the organ repertoire in general. This is what it was designed for. AJJ
  24. How about then. AJJ Much more here.
